The penultimate episode of Ted Lasso Season 3 on Apple TV+ ends on a cliffhanger. In a winking, meta way, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) explains this is the time of year she comes down to Ted (Jason Sudeikis) to reveal something major. The only problem is she can’t think of a single secret she’s been keeping from Ted. That’s when Ted turns the tables. Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 11 “Mom City” ends with Ted confessing that he has a “truth bomb.”

So what is Ted Lasso’s truth bomb on Ted Lasso?

Ted’s truth bomb is likely one of two major, show-shifting revelations. The first is that he’s leaving AFC Richmond and returning home to the United States to be closer to his son Henry (Gus Turner). This would line up with Ted’s season-long arc pining for his son, his cathartic conversation with his mother (Becky Ann Baker), and the end credits song, Brandi Carlisle covering “Home” from The Wiz. The second is that he’s been secretly in love with Rebecca this whole time, which would line up with several rabid fan theories. This is also supported by the facts that Ted is a single man, Rebecca is a single woman, and they watched a Nora Ephron rom-com in this week’s episode.

So what is it? What is Ted Lasso about to reveal to Rebecca in the Ted Lasso Season 3 finale? And how could Ted’s truth bomb totally change the future of the show? Here are our two best theories…

What Is Ted’s Truth Bomb on Ted Lasso: Is Ted Leaving Richmond?

If you follow Ted’s arc from the opening scene of Season 3 to his last scene before chatting with Rebecca, it’s not hard to surmise that Ted is planning on going home to the states. We kicked off the season with Ted despondently putting his son on a (non-realistic) flight from Heathrow to Kansas City and darkly asking aloud why he’s still in the UK. After finally confronting his mother about her parental missteps in the wake of his father’s death by suicide, Ted admits that he’s afraid to get too close to Henry. His mother gives him a pep talk about love, life, and parenting. Her main message? Henry misses Ted and needs his father.

All this, plus some pointed musical cues in the episode — “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Home” — suggest that Ted’s magical journey with AFC Richmond is coming to a close and he’s going to tell Rebecca he’s going home. To Kansas City, not Kansas the state, but the Wizard of Oz references still hold weight.

If this is so, it explains why rumors have been swirling that this is the final season of Ted Lasso and why Sudeikis has been reluctant to say this is the end of the story. He might be leaving this world, closing the curtain on the saga that is “Ted Lasso,” but Apple TV+ could easily follow Rebecca and the rest of the AFC Richmond family in any number of spin-offs.

Of course, some fans think the show’s endgame is supposed to be decidedly more romantic in nature…

Is Ted’s Truth Bomb That He Loves Rebecca? Tedbecca Confirmed!?!

Even before Rebecca’s cryptic visit to a psychic, there has been an ardent subset of Ted Lasso fans devoted to the theory that the whole show is a secret romantic comedy about how true soulmates Ted Lasso and Rebecca Welton finally admit their love for one another. They talk about color palates and rom-com references and toy soldiers and green matchbooks that are actually green match books, as in Ted’s notebook. For them this is the moment it all happens. The moment Ted admits his feelings for Rebecca.

And look, maybe it will happen. After all, Rebecca’s arc this season has been all about trusting the universe, believing in herself, and embracing love whenever and wherever it arrives. She definitely should have some sort of romantic denouement in the final episode of the season. But Ted isn’t the only potential suitor in Rebecca’s orbit. There’s also Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) and that mystery boat man (Matteo van der Grijn) in Amsterdam.

Did you hate Sam and Rebecca’s Season 2 romance? The one where they unwittingly wooed each other on Bantr only to try a real relationship in secret? Well, guess what? It was Sam and Rebecca who wistfully locked eyes during the ending of You’ve Got Mail in this week’s Ted Lasso. The all-important green matchbook is from Sam’s restaurant. And there’s been more than one hint that Sam and Rebecca aren’t fully over each other.

But let’s say it’s not Sam. After all, Dutch mystery man not only swept Rebecca off her feet out of a canal, but comes with a ready-made family for Ms. Welton. Part of the prophecy also promises Rebecca that she will be a mother. Will she get pregnant after all (by Sam)?? Will she adopt the nameless Netherlander’s daughter? Will she co-parent Henry with Ted in Kansas City? Or is she destined to mother the team at AFC Richmond?

Ted’s “truth bomb” could very well be the revelation that leads Rebecca to her prophecy’s happy ending, whether by paving the way for a surprising true love or by teaching Rebecca to accept everything life throws at her.

The Ted Lasso Season 3 finale will premiere on Apple TV+ on May 31.
