The new Roku series The Great American Baking Show is an Americanized version of The Great British Bake-Off that retains quite a few of the most crucial elements of the British version of the show. First off, this season features both Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith as judges, marking the first time that the American spin-off had used both current judges from GBBO.

And the format of the show remains largely the same as its British counterpart: the bakers are all challenged with three bakes during each episode, a technical, a showstopper and a signature.

Of course, there are a couple of huge differences between the American version and the British one, the first being that American actors Ellie Kemper and Zach Cherry are the hosts, and the second being that all of the contestants are American. But for a show that’s putting an American spin on things, there’s still one very decidedly British aspect of the show that audiences might have caught on to: The Great American Baking Show filming location is actually … England.

Where Is ‘The Great American Baking Show’ Filmed?

If the bucolic scenery around the tent on The Great American Baking Show looks familiar, that’s because the show was actually filmed outside of London at Pinewood Studios. Many of the outdoor shots were filmed at a Victorian mansion on the grounds of Pinewood called Heatherden Hall. Heatherden has also been used in films like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, To Russia With Love and the TV show Midsomer Murders.

Pinewood is perhaps most famous for being the studio where loads of Marvel, Disney and Star Wars films have been shot, but most seasons of the Great British Bake-Off have never filmed there.

Instead, they have been shot at Welford Park, an estate in Berkshire County, and at Down Hall in Hatfield Heath.

As for why the American show was filmed in England, Paul Hollywood recently told Newsweek, “I think it’s to try and keep it as close to the original as possible.”

He added, “We did have a lot of execs over from America, and it was a nice blend of American and U.K. camera crew and sound crew. And we had our team from [The Great British Bake Off] so it kept that same feel because you don’t want to change it at all, really.”
