If you’ve devoured all eight episodes of Netflix’s new political drama, The Diplomat, you know that Season 1 ends with some major cliffhangers.

Created by Debora Cahn (Homeland, The West Wing), The Diplomat stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, a newly-appointed U.S. diplomat in the UK who’s working with her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), British foreign secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), her right-hand man Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), and London’s CIA chief Eidra Park (Ali Ahn) to navigate next steps and figure out who’s behind a British aircraft carrier explosion that killed dozens of sailors.

In an explosive finale, Kate and Dennison finally have a serious revelation. But when another attack is carried out, the lives of Kate’s loved ones are left hanging in the balance. Will the cliffhangers be resolved? Will there be a Season 2 of The Diplomat on Netflix? Read on to learn what we know about The Diplomat‘s renewal status and potential Season 2 storylines. Just be mindful that The Diplomat spoilers lie ahead.

Will There Be A Season 2 Of The Diplomat On Netflix?

Yes! All eight episodes of The Diplomat Season 1 were released on April 20, 2023. As of April 21, there were no official Season 2 updates from Netflix, but on Monday, May 1, Netflix announced that The Diplomat has been renewed for a second season.

“I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun? Thank you Netflix for giving us another shot,” Russell, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, said in a statement.

“We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it. We’re so glad we get to do it again!” creator, showrunner, and EP Debora Cahn said.

Considering Cahn’s other successes, Russell and Sewell’s star power, and the overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, it’s no surprise The Diplomat is returning with more new episodes. Especially since quite a few Season 1 storylines can be carried over and further explored.

The series debuted at #1 on Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 TV list, and reportedly banked 57.48M hours viewed in its first weekend, so it’s no wonder Netflix wants more.

“Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping and propulsive drama, and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler.  After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2.” Netflix’s VP of Drama Series Jinny Howe said in a statement. So what’s in store for Season 2? We’ve got some ideas.

The Diplomat Season 2 Plot: Potential Storylines

In the finale’s final moments, Kate and Dennison realize that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) likely hired Roman Lenkov and, thus, was responsible for the attack on Britain all along. Season 2 will explore the aftermath of that damning revelation, along with the fates of Merritt Grove, Hal, Hayford, and Ronnie, who were in the range of a car bomb that went off when Grove tried to get into his vehicle. We’ll hopefully realize who was behind the bomb (Trowbridge? Maggie Roylin??) and why. And we’ll also see if there are any developments in Kate’s potential promotion to Vice President.

Here’s hoping The Diplomat Season 2 isn’t all work and no play, because we need to see more of that love triangle between Kate, Hal, and Dennison, too.

The Diplomat Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
