Katy Perry seems to be having a rough time this season of American Idol.

Perry was recently criticized by viewers at home for making an inappropriate joke about contestant Sara Beth and for tricking contestants into thinking they were being sent home. But, this time, the American Idol audience was not here for Perry’s criticism of one of the show’s contestants.

The audience booed Perry when she suggested on Monday’s (April 17) episode that Nutsa lay off her signature glitter.

“Nutsa every time you take the stage it’s like you glitter bomb the stage,” she said. “Listen, one thing that I would like to see from you is not one piece of glitter the next time. I know that is going to be hard.”

Judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie both stood up in surprise at the crowd’s boos.

“Katy got booed!” Bryan exclaimed.

“First time in six seasons,” Perry responded as the jeers died down. “What I’m saying is that I’d like you to flip the script. I think we want to be pulled in by our hearts, too. I’d love to see that and America might too.”

Nutsa brought her signature showmanship to her performance of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ “Paris (Ooh La La),” wearing a glimmering silver dress and matching boots. The singer hailing from Tbilisi, Georgia, was one of the Top 26 contestants competing at the Aulani, Disney Resort & Spa in Kapolei, Hawaii.

Despite the crowd’s reaction, Nutsa took Perry’s advice in stride.

The contestant recently apologized to the judges after her duet partner, Carina DeAngelo, accused her of sleeping through their rehearsal. After learning about their issues working together, Perry had advised Nutsa, “Don’t forget about grace. More grace.”

Nutsa became emotional as she shared her perspective on the duet round with the judges. But Perry offered her a hug and some kind words of encouragement.

“What I meant about grace is that it’s OK to be determined and ambitious and edgy and strong but also with grace,” Perry replied. “I really relate to you because I know what it means to be a strong woman and want to be strong, to never break and to never feel like anything can ever get to me, but that’s not real.”

American Idol airs on Sunday nights at 8/7c on ABC.
