HBO‘s Succession is the story of a family, but one of the major Roy matriarchs has been noticeably absent from Season 4 so far. Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) third wife Marcia (Hiam Abbass) was originally introduced as a power player in the family’s dynamic all the way in Season 1. However she hasn’t been seen since the Succession Season 3 premiere. So what happened to Marcia on Succession? Is there a reason she was written off the show?

Since this is the final season of Succession, fans might expect to see loose threads from years past tied up or beloved characters return. After all, we’ve already seen the likes of Nan Pierce (Cherry Jones), Sandy (Hope Davis), and Cyd (Jeannie Berlin). So is there a reason why Marcia — who is still technically married to Logan — hasn’t popped up to cause drama yet? Has Logan’s latest mistress Kerry (Zoe Winters) managed to clear a path to become Mrs. Logan Roy #4???

Here’s everything we know about what happened to Marcia on Succession

What Happened to Marcia on Succession?

Can’t remember what went down with Marcia on Succession? Well, after she figured out that Logan was having an affair with Rhea Jarrell (Holly Hunter), she freaked out — and rightfully so. Logan hadn’t just betrayed his marriage vows, but was angling to give this outsider the keys to Waystar RoyCo.

By the time Succession Season 3 begins, Logan is scrambling to keep Marcia with him for optics in the wakes of Kendall’s (Jeremy Strong) explosive press conference. Marcia uses his affair as leverage to secure herself and her family more money, more shares in the company, and more power. It’s brought up at this point that Marcia knows about the cater waiter Kendall killed back in Season 1, but that knowledge could blow up in her lap if used against Kendall.

We recount all this because even though Marcia’s not physically in Succession Season 4, her presence lingers. It’s why Greg (Nicholas Braun) tries to use her name to strengthen his own place in the family during Logan’s birthday and why Kerry quickly tries to squash the ghost of her lover’s legal wife. She snipes that Marcia is “in Milan shopping — forever.”

But why would the show bring Marcia up like that if not to, you know, potentially tease her return? The final season of Succession is far from over yet.
