‘Wakanda Forever’ Star Angela Bassett Shouts Out Marvel Fans In Impassioned Golden Globe Acceptance Speech

Angela Bassett made history at tonight’s 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards, becoming the first Marvel actor to win a Golden Globe for their role in a Marvel movie. She accepted the award for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Bassett opened her acceptance speech by reflecting on her first Golden Globe win for What’s Love Got to Do with It in 1993. She went on to quote the late Tony Morrison, saying, “Your life is already a miracle of chance, just waiting for you to order its destiny.”

The actor explained, “But in order for that destiny to manifest, I think it requires [the] courage to have faith. It requires patience, as we just heard, and it requires a true sense of yourself. It’s not easy because the past is circuitous and it has many unexpected detours.”

Bassett continued to express her gratitude towards the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organization who presents the Golden Globes), her “amazing” team, and her family. “I love you from the depths of my heart,” she said.

The actor also thanked her “Marvel Disney family,” giving shout-outs to Ryan Coogler, Kevin Feige, and the cast and crew of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. “We embarked on this journey together with love. We mourned, we loved, we healed, and we were surrounded each and every day by the light and the spirit of Chadwick Boseman,” she said in reference to her late costar.

“We have joy in knowing that this historic Black Panther series is a part of his legacy that he helped to lead us to,” Bassett added. “We showed the world what Black unity, leadership, and love looks like beyond, behind, and in front of the camera.”

Recognizing the impact of the award, she concluded with, “And to the Marvel fans, thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love. We just made history with this nomination and with this award. It belongs to all of you. All of us. Thank you.”

The first Black Panther movie was nominated for three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Original Song, and Best Original Score, but won zero. In addition to Bassett’s win, the sequel is still up for Best Original Song for “Life My Up” by Rihanna.
