‘The Witcher’s Joey Batey Teases Romance for Jaskier in Season 3: “With More Than One Person, Maybe?”

The Witcher: Blood Origin may be telling a brand-new story, but it starts with a familiar face. The upcoming miniseries, though set in the past, features none other than a present-day version of Jaskier (Joey Batey).  Exactly how the bard relates to this story of the Continent’s first witcher is a surprise that fans will have to wait and see for themselves. But during a recent press day for the series, Batey teased for Decider what’s in story for Jaskier in The Witcher‘s next season.

“There’s a lot more to do on Season 3. There’s perhaps a little bit of romance? With more than one person maybe?” Batey said.

“By the time we get to Season 3 we’re really delving into — for me — some of the best bits of the books,” Batey added. “And, I think fans of the books will know what’s coming, and I hope they know that it’s been realized in such an incredibly epic and mad, magical way.”

We already know who Jaskier has the most chemistry with: Geralt. But sadly, that is not canon in the books. Of course, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich could ditch the source material and give fans what they really want, but for now, the best way to figure out who Jaskier’s love interests may be is to look to Andrzej Sapkowski’s work.

Dandelion — the novels’ and games’ name for Jaskier — has had several romantic partners and infatuations. Ever the romantic, his interest in poetry was inspired at age 19 by his love for Countess de Stael. In fact, the first time Geralt met Dandelion was related to his love life. The two met in Gulet in Aedirn as Dandelion was hiding from four men who were furious at him for knocking up their sister.

All of that history aside, there are three romantic partners for Dandelion who play a notable role in the books and games: Anna Henrietta, Vespula, and Priscilla. Dandelion’s affair with Anna Henrietta, the duchess of Toussaint, happened before the Ciri saga truly began. Their relationship lasted for abut two months before Dandelion fled, fearing that the duke would learn of their entanglement. The two were reunited after the duke’s death when Geralt and Dandelion returned to Toussaint on their quest to save Ciri. They happily resumed their relationship. Dandelion even stayed behind with Anarietta instead of continuing Geralt’s journey, but it wasn’t long before Dandelion’s wandering eyes got the best of him. After being caught with the Baroness Nique, Anna Henrietta banished him from the duchy forever.

His brief relationship with Vespula isn’t any more elegant. The two had a brief relationship in the 1260s, which ended when she found out he was pursuing other women. While trying to get her revenge on the bard, she attacked Dudu, a doppler who was impersonating Dandelion at the time. Years later he was able to coax her into giving him one last chance, but when she saw him with a blonde woman, she promptly ended things.

That brings us to Priscilla, a character who only appears in the games. It’s widely believed that Priscilla is based on Essi Daven, a young and talented bard Dandelion comes to see as a little sister in the books. But in the games, Priscilla becomes the one person who can tame this wild musician. He even says that he hopes to settle down with her in Novigrad. It’s possible that The Witcher Season 3 will either include Priscilla or age up Essi Daven in order to make her relationship with Jaskier more romantic. Regardless of her name or relationship to our music man, Priscilla / Essi Daven is deeply important to Dandelion.
