Selena Gomez Disses Her Kidney Donor After Controversial Documentary Snub

Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa are publicly feuding over a small comment the “Hands to Myself” singer made while doing press for her new Apple TV+ documentary, My Mind and Me. Perhaps this could’ve just been a phone call, ladies?

While talking about her experience with fame, Gomez told Rolling Stone, “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong.”

The comment may seem innocent enough, but Raisa, who donated a kidney to Gomez in 2017, has been friends with the singer since 2007 and felt irked by the lack of recognition. At the time, the How I Met Your Father actor had made her film debut in Bring It On: All Or Nothing, and over the last decade, has held roles in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Dear White People, and Grown-ish.

When Gomez’ remarks were highlighted by E! News on Instagram, Raisa left a snarky comment, that has since been deleted, which read “Interesting.”

This caught the attention of TikTok user Stephanie Tleiji, who made a video explaining the drama and showing that Raisa has unfollowed Gomez on Instagram. Tleiji defended Gomez and said that the singer was likely referring to friends in the music industry, given that Gomez also failed to mention Cara Delevingne, who has been friends Gomez since 2014 and recently played her love interest in Season 2 of Only Murders in the Building.

“Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know,” Gomez commented on the TikTok video.

In the past, Gomez and Raisa have been open about their experiences undergoing the organ transplant. Raisa told Self in 2018 that she suffered through the healing process, more so than Gomez. She recalled being told “‘The recipient is going to glow, and she’s going to recover a lot faster than the donor is because she’s getting something she needs. You’re losing something you don’t need to lose. It’s going to be hard.'” She confirmed that “it was very hard” and the two suffered depression following the operation.

Commenting on the transplant, Raisa’s mom said, “Francia did it for friendship, for her love of Selena, and because they care a lot for each other. She didn’t receive any benefit from this, only the benefit of Selena having a better life.”

Gomez’s documentary My Mind and Me released November 2, 2022 on Apple TV+.
