New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: Persuasion, The Rehearsal, Don’t Make Me Go + More

HBO’s new show The Rehearsal and Nathan Fielder, the man behind it, both seem to defy description. In Decider’s official review of the new series, we asked, “Is Nathan Fielder a modern Andy Kaufman, or a man grappling with the unanswerable questions of humanity?” and in order to determine the answer to that question, you had best tune in and decide for yourself. Similarly, some audiences who watched the Persuasion trailer are also wondering what the new Netflix film is actually doing. Is it an earnest retelling of Jane Austen? A cheeky, irreverent modern take that “misses the point” of its source material? Again, you’re going to have to watch to figure it out for yourself. And though Amazon Prime Video’s Don’t Make Me Go has all the markings of a heart-wrenching YA book-turned-movie, the John Cho/Mia Isaac film is actually based on an original script from writer Vera Herbert, about a father-daughter road trip, one last adventure before the dad dies.

New on HBO July 15: The Rehearsal

Nathan Fielder is back and ready to make people cringe again. In his new HBO show The Rehearsal, Fielder and a team of actors work with a regular person to rehearse a key conversation or event with the intention of getting it JUST RIGHT. The show blends scripted – or at least, intentional – setups that make it more than some kind of prank show where unsuspecting regular people are thrown off by his hijinks, and yet the whole premise is that unsuspecting regular people are thrown off by his hijinks. It’s awkward, it’s hilarious, and it’s distinctly the brand of humor that Fielder’s fans have come to expect, a worthy successor of Nathan For You, and one that expands on his talent for blending humor and discomfort.

New on Amazon Prime Video July 15: Don’t Make Me Go

John Cho stars as a single dad named Max Park who, upon learning that he has a terminal disease, decides to try to cram the adventure of a lifetime into a road trip with his teenage daughter Wally (Mia Isaac). By promising Wally to teach her to drive, Max convinces her to join him on an unforgettable road trip from California to New Orleans for his 20th college reunion, which is where he also hopes to reunite Wally with the mother she never knew.

New on Netflix July 15: Persuasion

After Netflix’s massive success with Bridgerton, which blended Regency-era romance with a modern aesthetic, it’s obvious that the streamer is hoping to capitalize off that old-meets-new vibe. Hence: Persuasion, a Dakota Johnson-led update to Jane Austen’s final novel. This version is most definitely modernized so, depending on how much of an Austen purist you are, you’ll either love it for it’s interpretation of the love story between Anne Elliott (Johnson) and Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis) or you’ll hate every last fourth-wall-breaking take to the camera.
