‘Miss Congeniality’ Fans Will Never Forget That Today, April 25th, Is The Perfect Date

There are just some dates that become legendary thanks to TV and movies. Some people legitimately celebrate Festivus on December 23rd thanks to Seinfeld. Millions of people use May 4th as a day to honor Star Wars. And many of us make sure to bring a light jacket with us on April 25th, otherwise known as Perfect Date Day or Miss Congeniality Day.

The unofficial holiday arose after actress Heather Burns delivered a now-legendary line in the 2000 Sandra Bullock film Miss Congeniality, where Burns played beauty pageant contestant Miss Rhode Island a.k.a. Cheryl Frasier. When William Shatner’s character, pageant host Stan Fields asks her to describe her perfect date, Cheryl answers, “That’s a tough one. Um, I’d have to say April 25th, because it’s not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket.” And thus, a holiday honoring the mild weather fluctuations of springtime was born.

Burns, who has since gone on to star in Bored To Death and Manchester By The Sea, knows her place in history, and acknowledged the holiday she helped create on her Instagram page, writing, “Wishing everyone love, light, and a PERFECT DATE! 🙏🏻❤️#april25th #misscongeniality.”

In a tweet from 2019, Shatner revealed the deeper meaning behind why the date of April 25th was chosen for the script of the film, explaining that the date was chosen because it’s director Donald Petrie’s wife’s birthday.

The holiday is beloved by many.

But there are those who just have to point out that, thanks to climate change, temperatures are shifting and the weather is not as ideal as it once was.

I say we’ll all be under water soon so let’s just enjoy Miss Congeniality Day while we can, okay?
