Nicola Coughlan Auditioned For ‘Stranger Things’ Before Landing ‘Bridgerton’

Nicola Coughlan is absolutely on fire these days between her work as Clare Devlin on sitcom Derry Girls and Penelope Featherington on regency drama Bridgerton. But did you know that before the Irish actress was penning titillating gossip as Lady Whistledown, she auditioned to sling scoops of ice cream alongside Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) in another Netflix phenomenon, Stranger Things?

In an April 8 BuzzFeed article, Coughlan opened up about her audition with Stranger Things a few years back, before she ever tried out for the Shondaland regency romance series.

“I auditioned to play Robin, Maya Hawke got it,” Coughlan told the publication. “She was far better than I ever would have been.”

The actress then went on to add, “It’s a good lesson to actors: Watch the stuff you didn’t get, because you’ll totally understand how it’s not personal.”

Well, we’re all glad that she kept on moving forward, because we can’t imagine anyone else as Penelope Featherington. Or as Robin Buckley, for that matter.

“You’re just right for some things, and you’re not right for other things,” Coughlan noted.

Hawke will reprise her role as Steve’s co-worker turned best bud in the highly anticipated Stranger Things Season 4, which premieres on Netflix next month on May 27. You can also look forward to Coughlan continuing to kill it in Derry Girls and Bridgerton, the former expected to see its third season hit Netflix by this summer, and the latter potentially hitting the platform sometime next year.
