Amy Schumer Wants Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Appear at Oscars

A good Academy Awards host isn’t afraid to take risks, whether comically or politically, on stage during the award ceremony. Amy Schumer is co-hosting the Oscars this year along with Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall, and in an interview that will appear on The Drew Barrymore Show, via ET Canada, Schumer discussed her new Hulu series Life & Beth, as well as her upcoming hosting gig.

In the interview, Schumer said that she does have one big idea she’d love to pull off at Sunday’s ceremony: “I actually pitched, I wanted to find a way to have [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy satellite in or make a tape or something just because there are so many eyes on the Oscars.”

“I am not afraid to go there,” Schumer said, “but it’s not me producing the Oscars.” It may also have to do with Zelenskyy’s schedule, which might be a little packed, what with his home country being invaded by Russia at the moment. Schumer explained that she would love the opportunity to comment on world events and give Zelenskyy a global platform. “I think there is definitely pressure in one way to be like, ‘This is a vacation, let people forget we just want to have this night,’ but it is like, ‘Well, we have so many eyes and ears on this show.’ I think it’s a great opportunity to at least comment on a couple of things. I have some jokes that kind of highlight the sort of current condition. I mean, there are so many awful things happening that it seems hard to focus on which one.”

With less than a week to go before the Oscars air, there’s still time for Schumer’s dream to come true, if producers come around.

The 94th annual Academy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, March 27.
