In Raised By Wolves Season 2, Episode 3, Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) find themselves distracted by their new creations. After personally leading the hunt against her own child, snake baby Number 7, Mother goes in for the kill only to discover her spawn is actually an herbivore. She brings the child back to the Collective to live in a cave, much to everyone’s skepticism. Elsewhere, Father has begun fighting for sport in exchange for the milky fuel blood needed to bring his own experiment, an ancient android he found broken up in artifact form, to life. Basically, Mother and Father are obsessed with their own creations, leaving them drifting apart and their human children less supervised than usual.

When Raised By Wolves first premiered on HBO Max in 2020, it told the story of two androids — Mother and Father — who had journeyed from Earth to Kepler-22b to raise a half dozen embryos as morally upright atheists. These children would help save humanity after a horrific holy war destroyed Earth forever. After a decade on the alien world, only one of the children, Campion (Winta McGrath), has survived, and Mother and Father must deal with unwelcome Mithraic settlers, hostile native life forms and Mother’s own secrets. By the time Raised By Wolves Season 2 begins, Mother and Father find themselves reunited with Campion and their five Mithraic charges on the far side of the world. There, Mother is haunted by the presence of her one natural-born child, the aforementioned monster, and Father discovers that he, too, can bring something to life via his secret experiment.

Decider caught up with Raised By Wolves creator and showrunner Aaron Guzikowski recently and we asked him about all about Mother and Father’s new creations and the havoc they’re set to wreck on Season 2.

Guzikowski confirmed to Decider that the serpent’s name is officially Number 7 and that “as far as we know, there are no other serpents” on the planet. So Number 7 may not want blood, but they certainly don’t mind dragging a safe hold of people into the acid sea.

That said, Guzikowski hinted the Serpent can trace its ancestry not just back to Mother but the to the fossilized serpents that litter Kepler-22b.

“As far as we know, they’re like the dinosaurs; they’ve become extinct,” Guzikowski said. “But we do know that this serpent is a bit different from the serpents of the old world, because this one comes from Mother, and she’s lended some of her attributes to it. The fact that it can fly. And there are perhaps other things in store that are also passed down from Mother…

“So right now, this is probably the only serpent on the planet. Only, this is kind of a serpent unlike any that the planet has known before,” he said.

Decider noted to Guzikowski that after seeing Mother carry Number 7 in her “womb”, we’re know watching Father bring his artifact android to life by, uh, squirting his own internal liquids onto it. Guzikowski laughed when we pointed this out. “It’s always hard to tell which came first, the implication or the idea or whatever it might be,” he said. “But yeah, you can’t get around it. He is definitely creating his own thing.”

“He was jealous Mother created a being without him and he feels kind of betrayed in a sense. He’s working through all of this resentment and he does it by eventually creating something of his own,” Guzikowski said, before making a more mundane comparison. “He’s kind of like the guy who’s in the garage rebuilding the car trying to get a hold of his mid-life crisis or whatever.”

However, Guzikowski warned that Father’s new side hobby might be more dangerous than a Sydney Sweeney-esque vintage car remodel.

“You know, he actually gets a lot more than he bargained for with his creation. Same as Mother, actually,” Guzikowski said. “I think this season is about power and in a lot of ways it’s about the power creations have over their creators as much as the opposite.”

You’ll have to stay tuned and buckled up to find out what the showrunner of Raised By Wolves means by that…
