The latest episode of HBO Max‘s Sex and the City spin-off, And Just Like That… faces the plastic surgery question head on, quite literally. After being bizarrely (and tastelessly) dumped by long-time love Stanford (Willie Garson), Anthony (Mario Cantone) needs a buddy to go to his “his and his” plastic surgery consultations. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is drafted for the gig and is stunned when the doctor is the smooth-talking, handsome, and persuasive Dr. Paul David (Jonathan Groff). The good doctor suggests a series of expensive procedures that would take the “last 15 years” off of Carrie’s face. Does our grief-stricken heroine opt for the surgery? Will Jonathan Groff become a regular recurring character on HBO Max’s And Just Like That…? HOW COULD STANFORD JUST “LEAVE” ANTHONY?!? Let’s break down Jonathan Groff’s appearance on the Sex and the City reboot…

HBO Max’s And Just Like That… follows Carrie Bradshaw and friends as they deal with grief, loss, and shifting cultural mores in 2022 New York City. In And Just Like That... Episode 6 “Diwali” — which was coincidentally directed by series lead Cynthia Nixon — Carrie buys a new apartment downtown in her efforts to move forward past the death of her husband, Big (Chris Noth). Carrie is so committed to forgetting the past that she’s kind of a sitting duck for Dr. Paul David. Carrie goes with Anthony to the consultation to stop him from doing anything drastic to his appearance, but by the end of the appointment, she’s tempted herself. Groff’s character is an incredibly charming character who has the ability to not only promise to restore Carrie’s face to its 2007 era glow, but also kind of flirts with Anthony.

Eventually, Carrie decides to not to opt for plastic surgery. She gives up the new apartment and settles back into her iconic brownstone flat. In the final moments of the episode, she says that she liked the last 15 years.

So is that for Jonathan Groff’s Dr. Paul David? Probably! Sex and the City had a long legacy of casting well-known theater and NYC-based actors like Groff in small, standalone parts. It’s entirely possible And Just Like That… cast the Hamilton/Matrix Resurrections/Frozen actor just for a fun little bit part in the episode. Nevertheless, the fact that Dr. Paul David definitely seemed into Anthony teases that And Just Like That.. might cycle him as a new love interest. (But that could be wishful thinking.)

Either way, Dr. Paul David certainly stood out. Maybe it was because Jonathan Groff played him or maybe it’s because he was a bizarrely accommodating medical professional. Who needs assistants? Or appointments? OR INSURANCE CARDS?! That was weird, right? Or is that how rich people’s doctors are like?
