In recent years, figuring out which films are streaming and which are exclusively playing in movie theaters has become more complicated than ever. But what if a theater just decided to fire up Prime Video like the rest of us? That’s exactly what happened in a viral TikTok, in which a local movie theater’s… unconventional methods left moviegoers stunned.

In user @rachel.m00re’s video, a theater full of people watched in confusion as their local movie theater’s employees pulled up Prime Video on the movie screen, then attempted to play the 2018 film Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch. But things got even weirder when a notice showed up onscreen warning that the maximum number of videos was already playing on the theater’s Prime Video account, leaving audiences groaning in frustration. “Apparently our movie theatre runs off fire tv & renting Amazon prime movies 👀😭,” the TikTok user captioned the video. Nothing like the magic of the movies!

In case you were wondering: Yes, streaming a movie in public for a group of people (especially paying customers!) is not a great idea, since individual movies are protected by copyright law. Sure, streamers like Netflix or Prime Video will often grant their original films limited theatrical runs, particularly around awards season (although exceptions have been made in the past so Netflix movies could be eligible for Academy Award contention).

As the pandemic continues, choosing whether to catch a movie in theaters or check it out is a major decision for many people. Hopefully, though, your local theater isn’t running on a Fire TV!
