Stephen Colbert Drags Dr. Oz Over Senate Campaign: “Fake Medical Claims … Fake Pennsylvania Claims”

Stephen Colbert tore into Dr. Mehmet Oz last night (November 30) on The Late Show over his Pennsylvania Senate campaign announcement.

“Turns out, running for Senate is the one weird trick to reduce belly fat,” the CBS talk show host joked, poking fun at the frequent health claims posited in Oz’s TV show.

The media personality announced on Tuesday that he will run as a Republican for an open Pennsylvania Senate seat being vacated by Senator Pat Toomey. “This is Dr. Oz’s first time running for office, so he’s staying humble with his promises,” Colbert said, highlighting a line from Oz’s campaign website that says he will “help re-light the ‘divine’ spark’ inside every American.”

“I’d settle for cheaper gas,” Colbert quipped. “But sure, Doc, check the pilot light on my ‘divine spark,’ just like they taught you at med school.”

The host went on to call out Oz’s past as a “liar, peddling questionable health advice on TV.” He pointed to some of the doctor’s more ludicrous claims, from coffee bean weight-loss pills to astrological signs’ influence on health.

As Colbert noted, “Dr. Oz may not just have fake medical claims, he may have fake Pennsylvania claims. Because he’s running there despite living in New Jersey for years.”

“And there’s a big difference between Pennsylvania and New Jersey,” he added. “Something to do with hoagies. I don’t know what it is, but they will murder you over it.”
