'Rebel Moon: Director's Cut:' More Blood, More Sex, and a More Comprehensible Plot
It doesn’t matter what the critics say, because Zack Snyder‘s zombie heist movie, Army of the Dead, was a hit for Netflix, and you know that means—more movies! That starts with Army of Thieves, a movie that serves as a prequel to Army of the Dead which began streaming on Netflix today. But the story of these misfits in the zombie apocalypse doesn’t end here—there are at least two more Army of the Dead-related projects to come, including Army of the Dead 2.
Snyder, who directed and co-wrote Army of the Dead, took a step back for Army of Thieves, which was directed by Matthias Schweighöfer. (Schweighöfer also starred as the film’s lead character, Dieter.) Still, Snyder shares a “story by” credit on the movie, which tells the origins of Dieter the master lockpick. It’s a tragic love story, in a way—Dieter falls in love with a woman named Gwendoline (Nathalie Emmanuel) who recruits him to pull off an impossible heist, but is forced to separate with her by the end of the film.
But according to Snyder, that may not be the end of Dieter and Gwendoline’s saga. The filmmaker hinted there’s more to come in Army of the Dead 2, which sounds like it may also serve as another Army of Thieves sequel.
WILL THERE BE AN ARMY OF THE DEAD 2?
Yes! The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Netflix gave Army of the Dead 2 a green light back in July, and Zack Snyder said in an interview for the Army of Thieves press notes that he is currently working on the direct sequel to Army of the Dead. “I’m working on a sequel to Army of the Dead, the main sequel, with Shay [Hatten, who co-wrote Army of the Dead and wrote Army of Thieves],” Snyder said. “And then there’s certainly room in the universe for other stories and other iterations of this story. Especially as you go into the next cycle of films or stories, it has an even larger global reach.”
And the director already has a title in mind: Planet of the Dead, as he said in a recent interview with Inverse. And it sounds like there’s a good chance that you haven’t seen the last of Dieter, despite the fact that he seemingly got killed by the zombie known as Zeus in Army of the Dead.
“The real adventure would be to see what happened to him when that safe door closed,” Snyder told Inverse. “Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left. I won’t tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2—aka Planet of the Dead—but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”
Basically, it sounds like there’s a pretty good “chance” that Dieter and Gwendoline will reunite in Army of the Dead 2, and that it will also serve as an Army of Thieves sequel.
WHAT IS THE ARMY OF THE DEAD 2 RELEASE DATE?
We don’t know. Snyder has another Netflix sci-fi movie, Rebel Moon, to work on before the next Army of the Dead sequel, so you’ll have to wait a while for an update on the Army of the Dead 2 release date. If they start filming next year, it’s possible you might see Planet of the Dead in late 2023, but that’s mere speculation.
In the meantime, you can also look forward to the animated prequel series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. The animated series is expected to release on Netflix in Spring 2022.
