Compared to Locke & Key Season 1? Season 2, which just premiered this past Friday (October 22) on Netflix, is a bloodbath. Multiple major characters die throughout the course of the ten episodes… Or do they?

That’s the big question, of course with any supernatural series. Because magic exists, and characters come back from the dead all the time, just because you saw someone bite it on screen doesn’t mean that character — or that actor — is gone for good.

With that in mind, and with massive spoiler warnings on, let’s break down the big deaths in Locke & Key Season 2, as well as the chance they may return… Including some info from the stars and showrunners themselves.

Popcorn Guy

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 1 "The Premiere"

Ah, misogynist popcorn guy (his name is actually Karl, and he’s played by Brett Houghton), we hardly knew ye. Granted, this isn’t a major character in the series, and we won’t break down every single death like this (sorry, random demons in the final episode). But given he complimented Eden’s (Hallea Jones) butt and then got his face bitten off, it felt worth the mention.

Will he return for Season 3? Uh, probably not. Eden and Gabe (Griffin Gluck) drag his body off in a carpet and we never hear from him again.

Fisherman

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 2 "The Head and the Heart"

Okay, fine, one additional rando, just because it’s gross (and then we’ll move on to the big character deaths). In the opening scene of Season 2, Episode 2, Eden and Gabe try out their ineffective Demon Key on a poor fisherman played by actor Cody Crain, and he explodes into bones and goop. Yuck. Shout out to his boat, which is named “Codfather,” though. Solid.

Will he return for Season 3? No, he’s bones and goop.

Erin Voss

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 6 "The Maze"

Okay, now we’re actually getting to it. Once Gabe and Eden are revealed at the end of Episode 5, all bets are off, and nobody is safe. That starts with Erin Voss (Joy Tanner), who just managed to escape her own head after Dodge (Laysla de Oliveira) trapped her there, decades earlier. Deciding to confront Gabe/Dodge once and for all, she took the Chain Key and the Great Lock and tracked him down to WinterFest. Unfortunately, she didn’t account for Eden, who knocked her out — and then Gabe choked her and broke her neck. Then they used the Plant Key to hide her body deep underground. RIP, Erin.

Will she return for Season 3? Older Erin Voss is definitely dead, but given we haven’t seen the whole history of the Keepers of the Keys, it is possible that we could see her again in flashback as young Erin Voss (Nicole James).

Javi

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 9 "Alpha & Omega"

Oh Javi (Kevin Alves), you dumb jock. After getting turned into a demon by Gabe, he makes the mistake of tangling with Eden, who proceeds to cut his throat with some skates.

Will he return for Season 3? Nah, Javi is probably dead, dead. Just cannon fodder in the war between Gabe and Eden.

Jackie Veda

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 9 "Alpha & Omega"

This one hurts. Jackie (Genevieve Kang) was corrupted by Gabe’s now working Demon Key, and taken over by a subservient demon. When Tyler discovered this, he forged the Alpha Key, which had the ability to unlock demons; but with the side effect that the host dies without them.

Will she return for Season 3? Almost definitely not. Jackie’s death is what spurs on Tyler’s decision to ultimately embrace growing up at the end of the season. So while we could see her again in some form, it would arguably lessen some of the weight of that sacrifice.

Daniel Mutuku

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 10 "Cliffhanger"

During the climactic battle Tyler unlocks a bunch of demons, but the big, name one is Detective Daniel Mutuku (Martin Roach). Nina Locke’s (Darby Stanchfield) friend and confidant was a big part of her dealing with her alcoholism in Season 1; but in Season 2 he was taken over by the Demon Key, and then died. What a bummer.

Will he return for Season 3? Probably not.

Dodge/Gabe

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 10 "Cliffhanger"

In the most jaw-dropping death of the season, the Locke kids finally take out the big bad Gabe, aka Dodge, for good. While battling the demon in a collapsing house, Tyler sneaks up and jabs the Alpha Key into Dodge’s back, unlocking the demon from its host, the echo of Lucas Caravaggio (Felix Mallard). As a side effect, Lucas is now back in the land of the living (albeit still as an echo) and demon free. Meanwhile, Gabe and Dodge are gone… Right?

Will they return for Season 3? So, here’s the thing: both Gabe and Dodge never actually existed, they were creations of the Identity Key made by Bad Echo Lucas. Since they didn’t exist, anyone else can use the Identity Key to become them. And though co-showrunner Meredith Averill was non-committal when asked (“Stay tuned,” was the answer), Gluck was equally non-committal, but pretty tease-y. The actor knowingly waggled his eyebrows, then added, “There’s always a chance… We’ve got magic and movie magic.” Sounds like we may see Gabe in some form — and perhaps Dodge, too.

Eden

Dies In: Season 2, Episode 10 "Cliffhanger"

One last death for the season: Eden, who made the mistake of telling the demon infected echo of Captain Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand) that she was the one in charge… So he threw her down a well. Even with Eden’s demon strength, it’s important to remember she’s still in a human body, and falling that far can kill pretty much anyone.

Will she return for Season 3? Like Gabe, Averill was non-committal about Eden’s return. But when asked, Jones said, “We’ll see. Dot, dot, dot.” So again, I’d bet on Matheson’s resident mean girl returning, sooner or later.
