‘The Sandman’: Get Your First Devilish Look at Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer

They say the devil is in the details. Or, at the very least, she’s in this new character poster for Netflix’s highly anticipated The Sandman, which just rolled out as part of the DC FanDome virtual event. And you know what? Brienne of Tarth could never.

That’s because Lucifer, aka the leader of Hell, will be played by none other than Gwendoline Christie on the upcoming series. In the two posters released, we see Lucifer’s kicky haircut, alabaster skin, and a hint of her wings in the background. It’s all accompanied by the tagline: “Never play games with Lucifer.” Which, yes, good all around advice. The second poster is much more ominous, with the same tagline, as well as a closer look at the spiked, coal-dark barbs at the end of Lucifer’s wings.

In the streaming series, which is based on the best-selling graphic novels by Neil Gaiman and a bevy of artists, Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), aka the king of dreams, encounters Lucifer while on the hunt for three items of power he lost while being held captive for decades. As you might imagine, Lucifer doesn’t just hand the item that may or may not be lost in Hell over to Morpheus, and it leads to a cascade of events that changes the after-life permanently, and potentially leads to Morpheus’ doom. You know, super chill stuff like that.

In fact, in the comics Lucifer was so popular, he (yes, he) was spun off into his own, long-running comic book series. Could the same be in the offing for Christie’s already iconic take on the devil? Only time will tell if Netflix wants to make a deal worthy of Satan himself. Or herself. Whichever.

The expansive cast of The Sandman also includes Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Asim Chaudhry as Abel, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Donna Preston as Despair, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Joely Richardson and Niamh Walsh as old and young Ethel Cripps, David Thewlis as John Dee, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall, and Sandra James Young as Unity Kincaid.

Though we don’t as of yet have a premiere date for the series, you can check out a first look at footage as well as additional character posters that were rolled our as part of Netflix’s TUDUM event. I love streaming events! More! More!

Here are the posters, below, and expect a lot more as we draw closer to whatever the Sandman premiere date may be:
