The Queen of Mean is here to stay. Starting today, Cruella is streaming on Disney+ at no additional cost to subscribers.
Emma Stone stars as the titular Disney villain in this live-action origin story, which explores how the character went from scheming as a young girl on the streets of 1970s London to becoming the wickedly fashionable antagonist fans first met in 101 Dalmatians.
Cruella originally debuted simultaneously in theaters and on Disney’s Premier Access platform on May 28. Under the current Premier Access model, viewers typically pay an extra $29.99 on top of their monthly or yearly Disney+ subscription costs in order to watch a film early.
The film became a pandemic hit for Disney, grossing over $226 million at the global box office and a little over $20 million on streaming. It eventually sparked interest in a sequel, with The Hollywood Reporter stating that Stone recently struck at eight-figure deal to return in the lead role.
Cruella arrives in the Disney+ library at an interesting time for the streamer, and the House of Mouse in general. Disney is still embroiled in a lawsuit with Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson, who — as sources claimed to The Wall Street Journal — lost over $50 million due to the Marvel film’s Disney+ release.
As former THR editor Matt Beloni reported in his newsletter What I’m Hearing…, Stone reportedly considered a similar lawsuit of her own, which Disney seems to have addressed with her Cruella 2 agreement. It’s unclear what the future of Disney+ Premier Access will be — Disney’s insistence on giving upcoming Marvel films Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals exclusive theatrical releases as the delta variant rages could be a sign the company is moving away from day-and-date releases. However, this could also mean Disney is biding its time until the Johansson lawsuit is settled.
Whatever the case may be, at least you can now watch Stone being brilliant, bad, and a little bit mad from the comfort of your own home.
