‘The OA’ Creators Brit Marling, Zal Batmanglij Set Limited Series ‘Retreat’ for FX

The team that brought you The OA is prepping another daring new series over at FX. From Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij comes Retreat, a mystery with a new type of detective leading the show. The news was announced at today’s FX TCA 2021 panel.

“Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have delivered a suspenseful story that updates the classic mystery genre with a bold new character for our times,” said Gina Balian, FX’s President of Original Programming. “We are thrilled that Brit and Zal and the rest of the creative team will bring this series to life with their unique points of view and care.”

The limited series is set to follow gen Z amateur sleuth Darby Hart as she attempts to solve a murder at a secluded retreat. Per FX’s logline, “Darby and 11 other guests are invited by a reclusive billionaire to participate in a Retreat at a remote and dazzling location. When one of the other guests is found dead, Darby must fight to prove it was murder against a tide of competing interests and before the killer takes another life.”

Retreat is executive produced by Marling, Batmanglij, and Andrea Sperling. Marling will also play a key role in the series.

Duo Marling and Batmanglij are known for their work on Netflix’s The OA, which starred Marling in the lead role of Prairie Johnson. The series follows the high-stakes drama that follows after Prairie goes missing and returns home, with folks worried about her potential new powers. The OA picked up nominations from awards shows like the GLAAD Media Awards and the Writers Guild of America Awards.

Along with Retreat, at today’s FX panel, the network has also announced two new installations in Ryan Murphy’s American Story saga, the renewal of American Horror Stories for Season 2, and What We Do in the Shadows renewal for Season 4.
