James Corden Ripped for Role in ‘Cinderella’: “There Needs to Be Jumpscare Warnings”

Amazon Prime Video has released the full trailer for their upcoming Cinderella adaptation starring Camila Cabello in her first acting role — and audiences have already noticed one upsetting detail. The upcoming movie musical co-stars James Corden, a frequent curse on films that fall in the genre. Yes, with Cinderella, the Corden Movie Musical Universe is expanding… And folks are not happy about the news.

Corden, who currently hosts The Late Late Show on CBS, has starred in a bevy of movie musicals. Apart from the new Cinderella, major movie musicals the star has appeared in include the maligned Cats, YesterdayThe Prom, and Into the Woods. The actor was widely criticized for his “gayface” in The Prom, with Twitter eventually sharing their scorn over his Golden Globe nomination earlier this year.

Though it wasn’t for the film itself, Corden also went under fire with his Cats co-star Rebel Wilson after they mocked their own movie’s VFX at the Oscars. The Visual Effects Society slammed the pair for a joke that “demeaned” their craft. It’s clear that Corden has developed quite the reputation in the movie musical world, and a bad one at that.

In the upcoming fantasy musical, Corden will star alongside big names like Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, Nicholas Galitzine, Pierce Brosnan, and Minnie Driver. Although pop-star Cabello is making her big break into screen acting, Corden took center stage as the reactions for the trailer rolled in on Twitter yesterday. “if capitalism doesn’t end every fairy tale will be about becoming a CEO and every musical will co-star james corden,” one Twitter user wrote. “make your choice.”

Some folks weren’t even hung up on the movie musical cycle — instead, they were put off by the idea that Corden gets cast in anything at all. “What kind of blackmail does James Corden have on Hollywood that he keeps getting cast in acting roles,” another user wrote.

Will Corden’s performance finally win folks over, or will it sink the ship all over again? Tune in for Cinderella, which is set to hit Prime Video on September 3. Scroll up to catch your first look at Corden in the film.
