‘Army of the Dead’ Ranks Among Netflix’s Most Popular Films With a Projected 72 Million Households, Netflix Reports

Army of the Dead is very much alive. Netflix reports that the new Zack Snyder zombie film debuted big on the streamer, earning the title of the No. 1 film around the world. The film is also on track to become “one of Netflix’s most popular films ever in its first four weeks,” the company shared on Twitter.

Netflix reports that 72 million households are projected to tune into Army of the Dead on the streamer over four weeks (the movie has thus far only been on Netflix for a week), as confirmed by Deadline. But it’s important to note their definition of a single view. When measuring audiences, Netflix counts two minutes of streaming as a view. So if you clicked on Army of the Dead but decided it wasn’t for you after just one scene, you’re still technically counted in the film’s viewership numbers.

Army of the Dead‘s new ranking potentially puts it just above the teen rom-com The Kissing Booth, which was streamed by 66 million households in its first four weeks, according to Netflix. In the ranking of most popular Netflix original films per Insider, Army of the Dead falls just below the Jamie Foxx action movie Project Power, which counted 75 million views in its first four weeks, as long as that 72 million number holds accurate three weeks from now.

Army of the Dead, which first premiered on Netflix on May 21, tells the story of a group of mercenaries who plot a heist in the middle of a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. The film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, and more. In response to today’s Netflix viewership numbers, Snyder — who wrote and directed the film — wrote on Twitter, “Thank you for the amazing support.”

While Army of the Dead was released in some theaters May 14, it had a larger streaming debut when it hit Netflix a week later. The zombie blockbuster is the latest Netflix film to hit the streamer, with Blue Miracle premiering this week and more originals including Fatherhood and Awake set to debut on Netflix next month.
