Kumail Nanjiani to Lead Chippendales Origin Story ‘Immigrant’ at Hulu

Kumail Nanjiani is set to star and executive produce Immigrant at Hulu, a limited series following the origin story of the stripper troupe Chippendales. The Silicon Valley star has teamed up with Pam & Tommy lead creator Robert Siegel to work on the project, which will run eight episodes. The show has earned a straight-to-series order, following the true story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee.

Per Deadline, the series will follow “the insane, darkly comedic, crime-ridden story behind the unique male revue that became a cultural phenomenon.” The Indian American entrepreneur formed Chippendales, but was later caught up in a fatal plot to kill some of his producers, dancers, and choreographers. He later pleaded guilty for arson, racketeering, and murder for hire.

Nanjiani is currently set to star in Marvel’s upcoming film with Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, Eternals, set to debut later this year. He’ll continue his ride with Disney property in Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Star Wars series set at Disney+.

The series will be written by Robert Siegel, Rajiv Joseph, and Mehar Sethi, who are also set to executive produce the project with Nanjiani, Dylan Sellers, and Chris Parker. Emily V. Gordon, who co-wrote The Big Sick with Nanjiani, is also set to executive produce the project. 20th Television will serve as the studio on the series.

Immigrant also marks the second Hulu series order for Siegel following true events. The writer is also working on Pam & Tommy, which is set to portray the true story behind the release sex tape of Pamela Anderson (Lily James) and Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan).
