The new Mortal Kombat is streaming on HBO Max today, and it’s a shiny new reboot of the beloved ’90s video game and film series featuring actors Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, and some very violent fighting.
But sometimes you don’t want the shiny new reboot. Sometimes you want the familiar grittiness of the original.
The 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, features many of the same characters as the 2021 film, and a similar, though not exactly the same, story. You’ve got the warrior Liu Kang (Robin Shou), the actor Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby), the soldier Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson) on a journey to battle the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa), all the while guided by the god Raiden (Christopher Lambert).
