Mortal Kombat is coming to HBO Max tomorrow, and anyone who is familiar with the Mortal Kombat video game will know this movie is not for the faint of heart.

Technically, this movie is rated R. But according to director Simon McQuoid, who spoke at a recent press event, Mortal Kombat very nearly received an NC-17 rating.

“What we had to be a bit careful of was […] you can get to NC-17 territory pretty quick,” McQuoid said, according to a report from Yahoo! “It’s different in a video game when it’s not real human beings. When you move this across to reality, a different set of things start to happen in your mind, and you get rated slightly differently. So there were certain things that are in the game that would mean the film would be unreleasable. And none of us wanted that. […] So we were balancing that stuff all the time. And there’s some stuff that you will see that really gets quite close to the line because we didn’t want people to go, ‘Meh. Seemed kind of lame.’”

WHEN DOES MORTAL KOMBAT COME ON HBO MAX? WHAT IS THE MORTAL KOMBAT RELEASE DATE?

Mortal Kombat will debut in U.S. theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously on Friday, April 23. The movie will stream on HBO Max, free to all subscribers, for one month, or 31 days.

WHAT TIME WILL MORTAL KOMBAT BE ON HBO MAX?

New titles typically premiere on HBO Max at midnight on the West Coast. Therefore, you can expect that Mortal Kombat will begin streaming on HBO Max on Friday, April 23 at 12 a.m. PT, or 3 a.m. ET. If you don’t see Mortal Kombat on HBO Max on Thursday night at midnight on the West Coast, you should try refreshing the page, or logging out and logging back in to HBO Max.

HOW TO WATCH MORTAL KOMBAT ON HBO MAX:

You can either put on your mask and drive to your local theater to watch Mortal Kombat, or you can watch it from the safety of your home with a subscription to HBO Max, the premium streaming option offered by HBO, where Mortal Kombat will be streaming for 31 days, beginning on April 23.

No. Unfortunately, the HBO Max free trial offer ended last year, ahead of the release of Wonder Woman 1984 on the streaming service. Instead, HBO Max is offering a promotional discount for customers willing to pay for a six-month subscription, who will pay $69.99 for six months, a 22 percent discount from the usual $14.99/month fee.
