Just when you thought all of the superhero IP had been mined already by Marvel, DC and The Boys over at Amazon Prime Video, here comes Netflix with Jupiter’s Legacy.

The first trailer for the eight-episode Netflix series just dropped, and it’s giving us a lot to think about. Just look at our heroes here! That’s Leslie Bibb as Grace Sampson, Josh Duhamel giving us wigged-out, hungover Gandalf Zaddy cosplay as her husband Sheldon Sampson, and Ben Daniels as his older brother Walter Sampson.

JUPITER'S LEGACY (L-R) LESLIE BIBB as GRACE SAMPSON, JOSH DUHAMEL as SHELDON SAMPSON, and BEN DANIELS as WALTER SAMPSON in episode 2 of JUPITER'S LEGACY.

So the story goes, or at least what we can make out from the trailer, these three and their buddies happened upon a magical island in the 1930s and sacrificed … well, something (or someone?).

“Don’t you remember the island…and what we had to do…to earn these powers?” we hear Bibb’s character asking.

Cut to present day, and our heroes in “The Union” have aged, albeit slowly, but still managed to give birth to a new generation of potential heroes, who themselves might not be so super and/or struggling to live up to the legacies of their parents. How the kids inherited their powers? I haven’t read the comics, but hopefully they’ll tell us.

The rest of the cast includes Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, Mike Wade, and Matt Lanter, with previous casting announcements suggesting the appearances of YouTuber Anna Akana and former wrestler Daryl Karolat (who played Sabretooth in 2000’s X-Men and Michael Myers in the remakes of Halloween).

Even if you don’t know much about Jupiter’s Legacy, you should be familiar with the guys who wrote the comics in 2013 and the guy who’s bringing it to the screen now.

The trailer mentions Mark Millar, who brought us Kingsman and Kick-Ass, but he also wrote the Marvel storylines that begat Captain America: Civil War and Logan. And the series creator, Steven S. DeKnight, previously wrote on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Smallville, created Spartacus for Starz, and was the first-season showrunner for Netflix’s Daredevil. This is the first series to launch from Millar’s mega-million dollar production deal with Netflix, first announced back in 2018.

Jupiter’s Legacy drops all eight episodes on Netflix on May 7, 2021.
