Will There Be A ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Sequel?

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally here. And naturally, the first question fans will have after streaming all four hours of The Snyder Cut on HBO Max is: When will Justice League Part 2 come out?

We don’t blame you for looking for a Justice League sequel, considering the fact that Zack Snyder’s Justice League ends on a humongous cliffhanger. But, unfortunately, it’s currently unlikely that there will be more Justice League movies from director Zack Snyder. While fans will likely be disappointed by that news, the director himself has already moved on. His new zombie heist film, Army of the Dead, is coming to Netflix this summer, and he’s already wrapped filming on the follow-up to it, Army of the Dead: The Prequel.

That doesn’t mean this is the last time you’ll see these actors playing these characters, however. Jason Momoa will return for Aquaman 2 next year, Gal Gadot is on board for Wonder Woman 3, and even Ben Affleck will put the Batman mask on again for an appearance in the upcoming film The Flash starring Ezra Miller.

But as for another Justice League movie? It’s not looking good. Here’s what we know about Justice League Part 2.

How does Zack Snyder’s Justice League end? What is the Justice League cliffhanger?

In the final moments of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Bruce Wayne gets an unexpected visit from someone who calls himself The Martian Manhunter. As readers of the comics will know, The Martian Manhunter is, well, a martian, as well as one of the seven original members of the Justice League.

Dun dun dun! New character alert! Normally, a cliffhanger like this would be the setup for more movies: Either an origin story movie for The Martian Manhunter or another Justice League film. And indeed, Snyder had originally planned more movies, and that’s why his original vision for the film ended on a cliffhanger. Because the entire point of The Snyder Cut was to preserve Snyder’s original vision, he decided to leave the cliffhanger in place. But that doesn’t necessarily mean his plan for sequels that he had before he left the original Justice League production is still in place today.

Will there be a Justice League Part 2? Will there be a Snyder Cut sequel?

Never say never, but it’s unlikely. At this time neither Warner Bros. nor Snyder is actively pursuing more Justice League films. (Justice League Part 2, which had previously been scheduled for a 2019 release, has been indefinitely delayed.) In an interview with Deborah Snyder, the Justice League producer told Decider neither she nor her husband was currently thinking about another Justice League film, and that Warner Brothers “has moved in another direction.”

“There are so many stories we want to tell that are out there,” Deborah Snyder said. “This journey has been so great. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get to this point. I think we’re just enjoying the moment because we haven’t had a chance to catch our breath from all the production and the deadlines of delivering it in time.”

Warner Bros. is instead focused on more stand-alone DC films like Joker, Birds of Prey, and the upcoming Batman film, The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Zack Snyder described what he would have done in future Justice League movies, had he gotten to make them:

It’s the fall of Earth, when Superman succumbs to anti-life. And then sending Flash back in time to change one element so that doesn’t happen. And then the big battle where we beat him. When [the villain] Darkseid comes to Earth, in the movie that you’ll never see, the armies of Earth all unite again, as they did before. This time there would be aircraft carriers and Special Forces guys, all the armies of the world would come together, as well as [Aquaman’s fellow] Atlanteans rising out of the ocean and the Themyscirans [Wonder Woman’s compatriots] coming off their island. That was our big finale. But it’s a long drum roll and guitar solo to get there.
