Earlier this week, all ten episodes of Kevin James’ NASCAR sitcom The Crew premiered on Netflix. Created by Jeff Lowell, the racing comedy follows the highs and lows of the ragtag group of racing professionals who make up the fictional Bobby Spencer Racing team. The team is in a state of disarray after the owner steps down and places his daughter Catherine (Jillian Mueller) in charge of day-to-day operations. Catherine’s attempts to modernize the team rankle Kevin (James) as the two attempt to combine Catherine’s business savvy with Kevin’s racing expertise.
Fans who’ve already raced through all ten Season 1 episodes are left with one simple question: Will there be a Season 2 of The Crew? Unfortunately, we don’t have an official answer to that question (yet), but here’s everything we know about a potential second season.
HAS THE CREW BEEN RENEWED FOR SEASON 2?
Nope, but that’s completely normal. The series just debuted on Netflix, so it’s going to be a while before the streamer makes an official announcement regarding the future of the series.
WILL THERE BE A SEASON 2 OF THE CREW?
*** UPDATE (7/7/21): Nope. Netflix has officially canceled The Crew. ***
This one could truly go either way. The Crew has garnered middling to bad reviews, with The A.V. Club giving the series a C and Variety stating that it “rehashes lazy, sexist sitcom clichés.” The show’s IMDB rating (6.1/10) and Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score (currently 62%) are a little low, but there’s still hope for a second season.
The show’s closest analog is The Ranch, the Ashton Kutcher comedy that produced 80 episodes from 2016-2020 on Netflix. The Crew creator Jeff Lowell served as an executive producer on The Ranch, and while the sitcom was never a critical darling, it did amass a passionate fanbase. The Crew has already cracked Netflix’s Top 10 list, generated an above average amount of search traffic on Google Trends, and, perhaps most importantly, ended Season 1 on a cliffhanger.
Considering the popularity of Kevin James, the success of The Ranch, and the early interest in The Crew, we believe there’s a good chance (somewhere around 70%) that the show returns for a second season. We’ll update this story when additional information is released.
WHEN WILL THE CREW SEASON 2 BE ON NETFLIX?
If The Crew is renewed for Season 2, new episodes should premiere in early 2022. Production schedules remain in a constant state of flux due to the coronavirus, so it’s difficult to predict a potential release date. Our best guess is that the series would once again try to debut around the Daytona 500, which generally takes place in mid-to-late February.
