Tina Turner and her legendary, decades-spanning career is getting the HBO documentary treatment. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmakers Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin, HBO’s Tina will give fans an intimate look at the life of the music icon, her improbable rise, and her career resurgence in the 1980s. The feature length documentary debuts Saturday, March 27 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
HBO’s Tina combines new interviews with Turner and her closest friends and family members with never-before-seen footage and personal photos to tell the complete — and complex — story of the Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll. The feature doc will track the early days of her career, during which time she and husband Ike Turner, her musical partner, climbed the charts with hits like “River Deep – Mountain High,” “Proud Mary,” and A Fool in Love.” However, after filing for divorce in the late 1970s, Turner’s career stalled, and in 1981, she sat down with People Magazine music editor Carl Arrington and opened up about the harrowing abuse she suffered in her marriage.
The People Magazine interview reignited Turner’s career, and in 1983, at the age of 43, she released “Private Dancer,” which went on to become a massive success. The album ultimately sold over 12 million copies worldwide, with the single “What’s Love Got To Do With It” becoming her first and only #1 hit on the Billboard 100 charts.
Tina will explore these ups and downs, as well as Turner’s transition from mere music icon to cultural symbol. Over the course of the doc, fans will watch as that know her best — including Angela Bassett, star of the 1993 Tina Turner biopic, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Kurt Loder, and playwright Katori Hall — reflect on her immense talent, her legacy, and her winding journey to superstardom.
The new Tina Turner doc is presented by HBO Documentary Films and produced by Lightbox. Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn, and Diane Becker serve as producers, with Erwin Bach, Tali Pelman, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Mike Runagall, David Gilbery, and Charles Dorfman executive producing. Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller executive produce for HBO.
