The holidays are about to get a whole lot hotter thanks to Netflix’s steamy period drama Bridgerton. Shonda Rhimes’s first big soapy drama under Shondaland’s Netflix deal takes viewers to a sumptuous version of Regency England. The year is 1813. The marriage-minded debutantes and eligible bachelors are (almost) all hot. And young Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) is about to literally collide with the rakish young Duke of Hastings, Simon Bassett (Regé-Jean Page). Will they fall in love? Will they fall out of love? Both the books and the Netflix series follow the fortunes of the Bridgerton family, a powerful British family comprised of eight spirited children and their doting, widowed mother (Ruth Gemmell). The Bridgertons, their friends, and their rivals all find their lives thrown into tumult when a mysterious gossip writer named Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) appears on the scene. Whistledown not only names names when she pens her scandal sheet, but vows to uncover everyone’s most damning secrets.
