Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair Put a COVID Spin on Their Legendary ‘Cruel Intentions’ Kiss at MTV Movie Awards 2020

Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s iconic Cruel Intentions kiss has earned them a second Golden Popcorn trophy. On Sunday night, the duo won Legendary Lip Lock at the MTV Movie Awards 2020, and they celebrated by recreating the steamy moment — with COVID-19 precautions, that is. As Gellar and Blair leaned in, their lips smashed into a plexiglass divider, a feature that put a 2020 spin on the classic moment. Plexiglass or not, this kiss is still worth celebrating!

When Blair and Gellar first kissed in 1999 drama Cruel Intentions, the moment provided some much-needed LGBTQ representation for teens who had previously not seen themselves reflected in the pop culture world. The duo went on to win Best Kiss at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards, where they recreated their kiss in front of the show’s live audience. Now, 20 years later, Blair and Gellar’s Cruel Intentions kiss has been honored once again, this time by MTV fans who voted it the most Legendary Lip Lock of All Time.

“Thank you, MTV, for not just recognizing the kiss now with the Golden GOAT,” said Gellar, after the award was announced. “But also with a popcorn trophy back in 2000 for Best Kiss,” added Blair.

Gellar explained that their Cruel Intentions kiss is now “the single-most awarded kiss in cinema history,” which, of course, she’s already Googled.

“I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just for the initial shock value,” said Blair, “But because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality, and help make them comfortable to be who they really are.”

“It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture,” added Gellar. “Well, and also, it was super hot.”

As a “special thanks” to fans, Gellar and Blair proceeded to recreate the iconic moment, but it was cut short due to COVID-19 safety precautions. Damn you, plexiglass!

“Stay safe, MTV,” said Gellar. “And 2020, end soon.”
