Who Killed Elena in ‘The Undoing’? Top Fan Theories

So, wait… Did Henry kill Elena on The Undoing?!?

That’s the question on every fan’s mind this morning after the shocking revelations of The Undoing Episode 5 “Trial by Fury.” Not only did Rosemary Harris drop in for a cameo to tell us all that Hugh Grant‘s character is a stone cold sociopath, but Grace (Nicole Kidman) discovered the murder weapon in her son Henry’s (Noah Jupe) violin case. So who killed Elena (Matilda De Angelis) in The Undoing and will next week’s series finale really tie up all the loose ends?

Based on the novel You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz, The Undoing follows a world-class psychologist who learns her beloved husband Jonathan Fraser (Hugh Grant) might harbor a horrific dark side. Grace Fraser’s seemingly perfect life is turned upside down when a mysterious woman enters her life only to be brutally murdered. The main suspect? Her lover, Grace’s husband.

However The Undoing has offered up a number of other suspects for Elena’s murder. There’s her own husband, Fernando Alves (Ismael Cruz Cordova), Grace’s father Franklin (Donald Sutherland), and even Grace herself. The wildest suspect though? Grace and Jonathan’s young son.

If, like me, you’ve spent the last five weeks tipsily turning into HBO on Sunday night, glass of wine in hand, shouting at the screen, “Wow, I think Nicole Kidman did it!” or “Oh, no, wait, it’s so obviously Hugh Grant!” or after last night’s murder weapon reveal, “Holy shit, the kid did it?!?” then this post is for you. Who killed Elena Alves? Well, we have some thoughts….

1

Jonathan

The Suspect: Jonathan Fraser, played by Hugh Grant
Why We’re Buying It: Well, all signs point to him doing it! His DNA was all over the crime scene. He fled like a bandit. He’s proven to have sociopathic tendencies and a propensity for lying about…everything. He had the motive: to get rid of the baby mama bothering his other baby mama. So it’s seems pretty open/shut.
Why We’re Not Buying It: Not only is it too obvious, but as he keeps stating, infidelity and murder are not the same thing. Sure he was responsible for his sister’s death as a child, but indirectly. Cameras don’t place him close to the scene and he doesn’t have the murder weapon. So…maybe it’s not him?

Fernando

The Suspect: Fernando Alves, played by Ismael Cruz Cordova
Why We’re Buying It: Well, because usually the husband did it! He’s burning with rage and jealousy, as we’ve seen in his interactions with both Jonathan and Grace. Plus, he hasn’t been fully investigated. It would make sense?
Why We’re Not Buying It: He not only has that alibi, but he seems legitimately torn up over Elena’s death. He even has dutifully cared for the daughter he knows is not his. And honestly? The show hasn’t given us any evidence that he did it. So it’s highly unlikely.

Grace

The Suspect: Grace Fraser, played by Nicole Kidman
Why We’re Buying It: Ooo… well, there is the convenient fact that she was caught on camera walking within a block of the crime scene. Grace also seems to have ways of misremembering key details and forging a story that makes her feel safe. She could be lying to herself, via repressed memories, about the murder. Not to mention the fact that Elena was definitely all up in her business like a bad rash in the time before the murder.
Why We’re Not Buying It: As Grace said, she walks. SHE JUST WALKS! Okay? Also her DNA is not at the crime scene, nor is the murder weapon in her possession.

4

Franklin

The Suspect: Franklin Reinhardt, played by Donald Sutherland
Why We’re Buying It: Franklin might not seem like an obvious suspect, but he is fiercely protective of his family and their standing in the community. That, coupled with a creepy moment where it seems that he was stalking the Alves family, leads us to believe he’s capable of anything if it means protecting Henry and Grace.
Why We’re Not Buying It: He kind of just stays at home and goes to his art museum and isn’t really like…outwardly malicious. There’s little besides that one stalking scene to tie him to the Alveses.

5

Henry

The Suspect: Henry Fraser, played by Noah Jupe
Why We’re Buying It: UH BECAUSE THE FREAKING MURDER WEAPON WAS IN HIS VIOLIN CASE?!?! From the get-go Henry has seemed the perfect child. Dutiful, loyal, smart, and sweet. However now that we know Jonathan is likely a sociopath, it stands to reason that Henry could be, too. After all, father and son seem awfully connected. And the fact that Henry was lying about knowing about the affair this whole time?!? What else was he lying about?
Why We’re Not Buying It: Well…we kind of are? The only hiccup is that he could have been hiding the murder weapon to protect someone else. A persuasive Jonathan or frantic Grace.

So we’ll have to wait until The Undoing Episode 6, “The Bloody Truth” to find out what went down in Elena’s studio…
