Sorry, Taylor Lautner, but there’s a new Sharkboy in town. Today, Netflix released the first images from Sharkboy and Lavagirl 2, also known as We Can Be Heroes. Set many years after the original, the We Can Be Heroes Netflix movie reunites viewers with heroes Sharkboy and Lavagirl, now adults, as they embark on a new adventure: parenthood.
Of course, the Sharkboy and Lavagirl Netflix news has ignited the show’s passionate fan base, but there’s one catch. Lautner, the original Sharkboy, will not appear in We Can Be Heroes; instead, the role will be filled by J.J. Dashnaw. What gives?

IS TAYLOR LAUTNER IN SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL 2?
As far as we know, Taylor Lautner is not in We Can Be Heroes. While Taylor Dooley will be reprising her role as Lavagirl in the sequel, her compatriot Sharkboy has been recast.

That said, don’t fret! While the OG Sharkboy will not appear in Netflix’s We Can Be Heroes, Sharkboy will still make an appearance. On Wednesday, Netflix released a series of first-look photos from the film showcasing the duo’s tricked-out new suits — check them out below.
WHO’S REPLACING TAYLOR LAUTNER AS SHARKBOY IN WE CAN BE HEROES?
As the Netflix photos reveal, actor J.J. Dashnaw will be stepping in to Sharkboy’s suit in the new film.
MEET JJ DASHNAW, THE NEW WE CAN BE HEROES SHARKBOY
Sharkboy and Lavagirl fans will recognize Dashnaw from his work as a stuntman in various film and television projects, including Godless, The Equalizer 2, Lucy in the Sky, and The Hateful Eight. The bulk of his experience is as a stuntman or stunt coordinator, which makes sense considering that earlier this year, director Robert Rodriguez said that only Lavagirl will be speaking in the sequel. “Sharkboy and Lava Girl show up as superhero parents who now have a daughter who has shark and lava powers,” said Rodriguez. He later added that “the only speaking role is for Lavagirl.”
That said, we can still expect to see Dashnaw kick butt as Sharkboy.
WHO ELSE IS IN THE WE CAN BE HEROES NETFLIX CAST?
In addition to J.J. Dashnaw and Taylor Dooley, We Can Be Heroes stars Vivien Lyra Blair as Guppy, Sharkboy and Lavagirl’s young daughter. The Netflix sequel also features Priyanka Chopra, Pedro Pascal, Christian Slater, Boyd Holbrook, and Sung Kang, as well as a host of young stars.

You won’t have to wait too long to see Sharkboy and Lavagirl back in action. We Can Be Heroes premieres on January 1, 2021, so fans will be able to celebrate their New Year’s Day with the couple.
