The HBO Max app is still not available on Roku devices, but now, there’s a workaround that will allow you to stream HBO Max content on your TV. Variety reports that Roku’s new OS 9.4 update supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, which means that users with certain Roku models will be able to cast the HBO Max app from their Apple devices to TV sets. It’s not a legitimate HBO Max-Roku app, but hey, it’s something.

While not every Roku device will be able to access the OS 9.4 update, many 4K-enabled models will support new features like Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. According to Roku, the full list of AirPlay 2-supported Roku devices is as follows: Roku Ultra (4800x, 4670x, 4661x, 4662x, 4660x, 4640x); Roku Premiere (4630x, 4620x, 3920x); Roku Streaming Stick Plus (3811x, 3810x); Roku Streambar (9102x); and Roku Smart Soundbar (9101x, 9100x).

To access the features, make sure your device is running OS 9.4 or higher. The Roku support page explains that devices automatically check for available updates every 24-36 hours, but if you can’t wait that long, you can run a manual check for software updates, as well.

Once you’ve downloaded the new software, open the HBO Max app on an AirPlay 2-supported Apple device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 12.3 or later, or Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14.5 or later). Make sure that your Apple and Roku devices are on the same network, then tap the AirPlay icon and select your Roku device. Voila!

Unfortunately, those with older Roku models will have to wait until WarnerMedia and Roku agree to a deal to watch HBO Max on their TVs (or, you can update to a newer model). The two companies have been negotiating for months, but they seem to have come to an impasse over distribution. As Variety reports, Roku would prefer to sell HBO Max as a “channel,” as it does with other premium cablers, whereas WarnerMedia wants HBO Max to be a distinct streaming app like Netflix or Hulu. The two sides seem optimistic that they will reach an agreement soon, but neither seems willing to budge on their position.
