‘Sylvie’s Love’ Trailer: Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha Share a Summer Romance

Amazon is teasing its Christmas gift early with a first look at their upcoming holiday release, Sylvie’s Love. The first trailer for the Tessa Thompson starring Sundance hit dropped this morning, taking us back to the world of TV and music in 1960s New York City.

The film, which currently has a 100% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, follows a young woman named Sylvie (Thompson), who fills her summer days helping out at her dad’s record store as she anticipates her fiancé’s return from war. It’s there where she meets Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha), a saxophonist who plays in a jazz quartet by night and works part-time in the record store by day.

The two strike up a friendship, bonding over their deep love for culture and shared interests. In today’s trailer, Robert tells Sylvie, “I’ve never met a girl who knows as much about music as you do, and television.” Sylvie, who hopes to one day become a television producer, replies, “Don’t get me started. I’ve seen every episode of everything.” As they spend more time together over the summer, dancing in the streets, watching hours of TV and even sharing a passionate kiss, their friendship “sparks a deep passion in each of them unlike anything they have felt before.”

But, nothing lasts forever, and as the long summer days morph into shorter fall nights, the two friends diverge on distinctly different paths — Robert’s band is offered a gig playing in Paris, and while he asks Sylvie to come along, she stays back in the city, and they slowly drift apart until they lose contact. Years later, they’re brought together by a chance meeting. Sylvie is now a successful TV producer and Robert is back in New York to record an album, and while they’re different people than who they were that summer at the record store, they can’t deny that they still have feelings for each other.

In the film’s official description, Amazon calls Sylvie’s Love “a sweeping story that brings together changing times, a changing culture, and the true price of love.” The film comes from director and writer Eugene Ashe, and also stars Eva Longoria, Aja Naomi King, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jemima Kirke, Tone Bell and more.

Sylvie’s Love comes to Prime Video Dec. 25. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
