‘Raised by Wolves’ Season 2 Theories That May (or May Not) Happen

HBO Max’s Raised By Wolves was the surprised sci-fi hit of September. The breathtaking show spirited us away to the bizarre world of Kepler-22b, where two androids named Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) fought to raise a new generation of human children to be atheists. Of course, the Mithraic Church arrived in Episode 1 and immediately made that challenging for them. Raised By Wolves Season 1 ended with an explosive finale that introduced as many questions as it answered, leaving fans screaming for Raised By Wolves Season 2. But what happens next? Lets dive into the best Raised By Wolves Season 2 fan theories out there right now to see if we can guess…

Raised By Wolves is a show with a lot of lore, which means it inspires a lot of fan theories. When Decider chatted with Aaron Guzikowski last month ahead of the finale we asked if any surprised him with their inventiveness…or their accuracy.

“I guess, yes. But I can’t say specifically what. When I read through them, there’s so much that surprises me. Usually in a good way. But I can’t say specifically what,” Guzikowski said. “I love all the theories, I love all the biblical, Greek, Grimm’s fairy tale comparisons. All of these overlays and ways of looking at it. I guess it’s because a lot of the theories do brush against aspects, so it’s always fun to feel that.”

Oh really? Given that Guzikowski has admitted that some of the theories “brush against aspects” of his plan, it’s worth looking at what theories he might be reading on Reddit, seeing on YouTube, and catching in casual conversation. First, though, lets deal with what we do know for sure about the future of Raised By Wolves.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT RAISED BY WOLVES SEASON 2

Based on what showrunner Aaron Guzikowski has shared with Decider and other outlets, here’s what we know for sure about Raised By Wolves Season 2 and beyond:

  • He has at least five seasons worth of story planned.
  • Mother will interact in some way with her flying serpent child next season.
  • The serpent child is of a similar species to the serpents whose skeletons litter the landscape of Kepler-22b, but because it was born of Mother, this serpent will have special powers. (Flight appears to be one of them.)
  • Marcus (Travis Fimmel) will begin to exhibit certain abilities or side effects from swallowing Mother’s Necromancer eyes.
  • Sue (Niamh Algar) has an important part to play, and that’s why Guzikowski spared her at the end of S1.
  • Humans lived on Kepler-22b in the past, but have devolved into the subterranean creatures living underground.
  • There will be a time jump at some point.
  • And Raised By Wolves star Amanda Collin told Decider they shot more than one ending of Season 1 and she can’t spill what that other ending was…

Guzikowski also told Decider that Paul and Marcus’s visions, the ghostly visions of Tally, and more will be explained relatively early on in Season 2. The dispersed cast should also collide fairly early on, to boot. He also teased we might see still more humans arrive from Earth.

So given all that…

WHAT ARE THE BEST RAISED BY WOLVES SEASON 2 THEORIES?

From the Book of Enoch to the suggestion that Mother and Father time traveled through the core of Kepler-22b, here’s a quick overview of some of the best, most popular, and most convincing theories out there.

'Raised By Wolves' is Based on The Book of Enoch

One of the more popular Raised By Wolves theories on Reddit has to do with the Book of Enoch. An apocryphal text from the Old Testament, it’s said to explain the originals of demons, giants, and most importantly, the Nephilim. Per original poster TheBigLahey’s own words, it’s a little Tin Foil hat-y, and the original poster has already edited his original theory with updates as the first season progressed.

The basic gist is that Keplar-22b is the planet where human life originated and it was, in fact, our mythic Garden of Eden. The theory goes on to suggest the great hexagonal temple the Mithraic discover might be a prison for a “fallen angel” named Azazel, who is cultivating a new antichrist in the form of the false prophet Marcus.

As TheBigLahey puts it: “We have demons, we have a dodecahedron. I suggest Azâzêl was once part of these watchers described in The Book of the Watchers, and was imprisoned on Kepler-22b for taking humans and making nephilim. He now speaks through that relic the [M]ithraic have taken to, and I imagine wants out. Antichrist may help with that.”

Is it a lot? Yeah. But there are some compelling parts to it… such as the idea that Kepler-22b might be the original Garden of Eden. And there’s another theory that argues just that, albeit with some entirely different logic.

Mother and Father Time Traveled to the Garden of Eden

One of the most compelling theories I’ve heard since the Raised By Wolves Season 1 finale is that by traveling through the core of Kepler-22b, Mother and Father actually time traveled into the distant past. They are the mythic Adam and Eve, and Mother’s child is the serpent who tempted them. “The Tropical Zone” is the Garden of Eden.

The theory continues to suggest that the human characters will attempt to follow Mother and Father through the Core, and when it becomes clear that the serpent is too much to cope with, some humans will travel to the then verdant and unoccupied Earth to create our timeline. The remaining humans will eventually devolve and that Necromancer skull Mother discovered is actually her own remains.

This theory explains a lot. Most notably how Paul (Felix Jamieson) was able to discover cave drawings telling the story of everything that happens in the Season 1 finale (and how eerily similar the imagery lines up to the Biblical story of Adam and Eve). It also explains why the Season 1 finale is called “The Beginning,” rather cheekily.

One thing that’s not really touched upon? Why Kepler-22b defies the laws of physics and who is the Sol/Voice in both Paul and Marcus’s head…

"Sol" is a Parasitic Virus

There are a number of versions of this theory — for instance, this and this — but the essential idea is that the voice of “Sol” that Marcus and Paul have been hearing, the physical manifestations of Tally, the viral Campion Sturgis (Cosmo Jarvis) Mother mates with, maybe even Kepler-22b itself…is a parasitic virus that needs life forms to glom onto in order to spread and survive.

I think some version of this is the most obvious explanation for the seemingly inexplicable things we’ve seen in Raised By Wolves. Particularly since this metaphysical force seems to be manipulating all the characters to do its bidding.

The bigger question is if this viral force could also be a stand in for the “demons” or “Azazel” from prior theories. Or is it less of an immoral being and more of just a scientific virus determined to spawn at all costs, no good or evil or Biblical lore attached? (I mean, that kind of is the central theme of the series.)

And What of the Real Campion Sturgis?

RAISED BY WOLVES 106 -01

Okay, indulge me for a moment, but I personally think that the real Campion Sturgis is alive and on the atheist vessel we see in the Season 1 finale. I just feel in my bones that although our sweet hacker boi was coughing up a storm in his greenhouse lab, he’s managed to survive. If anything, he has to be one of the more important assets on the atheist side and his technical expertise could have helped fuel their mission to Kepler-22b.

I also think that Aaron Guzikowski is very good at seeding things that will be important later. The fact that Mother and Father were specifically asked to name the sixth baby in their first “litter” of children Campion seems to suggest that our boy Campion’s (Winta McGrath) name will be important, plot-wise in the future. If Marcus overtakes the atheists and uses their tech to track Sue and the kids, then it stands to reason that the real Campion Sturgis might realize Mother and Father are on the planet once he hears that one kid is named…Campion.

Of course, the thrill of Raised by Wolves is that it continues to surprise even the most hardboiled sci-fi fans, so the most sterling fan theory is that none of the fan theories will come to pass.
