Pixar’s ‘Soul’ to Premiere Exclusively on Disney+ This December

After debuting Mulan on its streaming platform this fall, Disney is dropping another big release on Disney+ this winter. The company announced today that the new Pixar film Soul will premiere on Disney+ this holiday season, forgoing a theatrical release altogether.

Soul, an animated family movie with an all-star cast, features Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Angela Bassett and Daveed Diggs. And while it’s got some serious talent behind each character, the movie is also bringing some top notch musicians along, with original jazz music by Jon Batiste and a score from The Social Network‘s Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving Soul with audiences direct to Disney+ in December,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”

Soul comes from filmmaker Pete Docter, the director behind Pixar hits like Inside Out and Up, and the Chief Creative Officer of Pixar Animation Studios. “The world can be an exhausting and frustrating place – but it’s also full of unexpected joys, even in seemingly mundane things,” Docter said in a statement. “Soul investigates what’s really important in our lives, a question we’re all asking these days. I hope it will bring some humor and fun to people at a time when everyone can surely use that.”

Before getting its exclusive Disney+ date, Soul was originally slated to debut in theaters this fall, with a Nov. 20 date scheduled. But now, Disney is moving it to streaming in the U.S., much like the company did with Artemis Fowl and Mulan. But unlike Mulan, Soul will not come with a premium fee, and will instead be included with all of the other titles offered with a standard Disney+ subscription.

Soul is coming to Disney+ Dec. 25. Watch the trailer for the new movie in the video above.
