Netflix has cast its legend. This past Tuesday (October 6) the streaming giant released the first teaser trailer and feature art for its upcoming drama Selena: The Series. And along the way it gave us all our first look at Christian Serratos as Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

Though this actor may be new to the world of Netflix, she isn’t new to television. Wondering where you’ve seen Serratos before? Here’s everything you need to know about this rising star.

Who Is Playing Selena on Netflix? Who Plays Selena in the New Series?

That would be Christian Serratos. The 30-year-old actor has been starring in film and television since 2004. Serratos is also an outspoken animal rights activist.

What Else Has Christian Serratos Been In?

Serratos has been a longtime star on one of TV’s biggest dramas, AMC’s The Walking Dead. Since Season 4 she’s played Rosita Espinosa, a survivor who accompanies Eugene and Abraham on their journey to Washington, D.C. Rosita later had a baby, and helped fight against the terrifying Whisperers.

Before she was killing zombies and contemplating her own mortality Serratos starred in Nickelodeon’s Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide as Suzie Crabgrass. She’s also starred in Zoey 101, American Horror Story, 7th Heaven, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager. But Serratos has one big film credit fans of a certain age are sure to recognize.

Was Christian Serratos in Twilight?

Yep, she sure was. Serratos starred as Angela Weber in all five of the Twilight movies. You may remember Angela as one of Bella’s few human friends. She’s sweet and shy and seemed to be one of the only worthwhile people in this crazy franchise.

Was There a Selena Casting Controversy?

There was, but it wasn’t about Christian Serratos. The 1997 drama Selena saw J Lo embody the iconic young singer. Though the film had an all Latinx cast there were protests about the Puerto Rican-American J Lo’s casting. Selena Quintanilla was Mexican-American who had Cherokee ancestry on her mother’s side.

Serratos’ background isn’t exactly like Quintanilla’s, but it is a bit closer. The actor’s mother is of Mexican descent and her father is of Italian descent. Because Selena is such an idol in the Mexican-American community the background of the actor playing her matters more than it may in other biographical projects.

Who Else Is in Selena: The Series‘ Cast?

The upcoming two-part series will also star Desperate Housewives‘ Ricardo Chavira, Selena and Resurrection Boulevard’s Seidy López, East Los High and The Purge’s Gabriel Chavarria, and The Young and the Restless and East Los High‘s Noemi Gonzalez. The series was created by Moisés Zamora, who has written for American Crime and Star. The first part of this upcoming drama is set to premiere on December 4.
