GLOW is coming to an unexpectedly early end. Netflix has no plans to resume filming Season 4 of the wrestling drama after the streaming platform had to halt production on GLOW earlier this year due to the coronavirus, Deadline reports. The cancellation comes more than a year after Netflix renewed GLOW for a fourth and final season in August 2019.
“COVID has killed actual humans. It’s a national tragedy and should be our focus,” Glow creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch said in a statement to Deadline. “COVID also apparently took down our show. Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW. We were handed the creative freedom to make a complicated comedy about women and tell their stories. And wrestle. And now that’s gone. There’s a lot of sh*tty things happening in the world that are much bigger than this right now. But it still sucks that we don’t get to see these 15 women in a frame together again.”
“We’ll miss our cast of weirdo clowns and our heroic crew. It was the best job,” they added, ending with, “Register to vote. And please vote.”
GLOW had already begun work on Season 4 in March when production was suspended about three weeks in due to the coronavirus. The drama had filmed one full episode and was beginning work on a second. GLOW faced the unique challenge of filming wrestling scenes during a pandemic; coronavirus protocols discourage the close contact and heavy breathing required of wrestlers on the show. Sources told Deadline that the large cast of about 20 people and the physical nature of the show brought the budget up to a figure too high for Netflix to continue with Season 4. Even if Netflix had continued with GLOW, fans wouldn’t have seen Season 4 for a couple years — new episodes wouldn’t have dropped until 2022, over two years after Season 3.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline. “We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world.”
GLOW, which first premiered on Netflix in 2017, stars Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron. The series follows the world of women’s wrestling in the ’80s, focusing on a group of 12 female wrestlers led by a movie director (Maron), all trying to make it big.
