‘El Topo’: Watch the Trippy Mexican Western That Inspired Lady Gaga’s “911” Video

After weeks of hype, Lady Gaga has finally released the official music video for “911,” a single from her new album Chromatica. Lady Gaga’s new music video may seem futuristic and forward-thinking (as all things Gaga are), but it actually has its roots in the past. As it turns out, Gaga’s “911” music video is based on Alejandro Jodorowsky’s El Topo, a trippy Mexican Western released in 1970.

There are quite a few connections between Lady Gaga’s new video and El Topo, but in order to fully appreciate them, you have to check out Jodorowsky’s film. Where can I watch El Topo? How does “911” connect to El Topo? Here’s everything you need to know!

LADY GAGA NEW VIDEO: OPENING SHOT VS EL TOPO

As eagle-eyed Twitter users have pointed out, the opening shot of “911” draws inspiration from a similar shot in Jodorowsky’s El Topo. At the beginning of the video, a man on horseback discovers Gaga laying alone in a desert of white sand. She follows the man on horseback to a chapel, and from there she begins to sing “911.”

Jodorowsky’s film begins similarly: viewers first meet El Topo (Jordowsky), a violent gunslinger, as he rides through the desert with his young son. Later, the father-son duo discover a town that has been ravaged by invaders, and he exacts revenge on the perpetrators.

DOES THE THE LADY GAGA NEW MUSIC VIDEO HAVE OTHER MOVIE REFERENCES?

The “911” music video features references to a handful of other foreign-language films, including Jodorowsky’s The Holy Mountain and Santa Sangre and Soviet art film The Color of Pomegranates (when Gaga wakes up in the desert, she finds herself surrounded by pomegranates and swaddled in red cloth).
