‘Borgen’ is Finally Streaming on Netflix

It’s a big day for foreign drama fans. Borgen is finally on Netflix! The dazzling Danish political thriller became an international sensation when it aired 10 years ago, but it’s hitherto only been available for purchase in the United States. (Meaning if you missed it when it aired on cable, you had to buy it on iTunes.) Today all three seasons of Borgen are streaming on Netflix in anticipation of the show’s fourth season in 2022. So what are you waiting for? Your next binge is here.

Borgen tells the story of how low-ranking centrist politician Birgitte Nyborg Christensen (Sidse Babett Knudsen) becomes the first female Prime Minister of Denmark. Helping (and sometimes hurting) her are her right-hand man spin doctor Kasper Juul (Pilou Asbæk) and his ex-girlfriend, TV journalist Katrine Fønsmark (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen). Borgen originally premiered in 2010 and ran for three seasons. Netflix has already announced plans to reunite the show’s stars and writers for a fourth season. Borgen Season 4 is due to premiere in 2022.

Borgen became a hugely influential show, inspiring a wave of Scandi-dramas and showing the appeal of slick political dramas. (Hey, what was Netflix’s first big original again? A slick political drama called House of Cards? Huh.) Moreover, its cast has found considerable success stateside. Star Sidse Babett Knudsen starred in the first season of Westworld while both Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and Pilou Asbæk appeared in Game of Thrones.
