Amber Riley Performs Touching Tribute to ‘Glee’ Co-Star Naya Rivera

Glee star Amber Riley is paying tribute to her friend and co-star Naya Rivera. Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the actress performed “A Moment” in honor of Rivera, who drowned while boating with her son at a California lake in July. Riley’s moving performance included photos of the two during their Glee days, as well as photos of Rivera with her son, Josey, and other family members.

Kimmel guest host Lil Rel Howery introduced Riley’s performance with a message about Rivera, their mutual friend. “Not too long ago, we both lost a really amazing friend in a tragic accident, and we both will miss her forever,” said the actor and comedian. “I really want to thank this show for really letting us do this. She’s here to perform a tribute to our good friend, Naya Rivera.”

Riley went on to perform “A Moment,” a single from her new EP Riley, out October 2. As the Glee star sang, photos of Rivera as a child and messages she wrote to her friends and family flashed behind her. The background soon transitioned to pictures of Rivera as a young adult on the Glee set, and in recent years, as a mother to her four-year-old son Josey.

On Wednesday, July 8, Rivera went missing while boating with her son in Lake Piru, California. That afternoon, the actress’ son was found alone on the rented pontoon boat, and authorities were immediately called to the scene. On July 13, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department officials announced that they found Rivera’s body following a five day-long search of the lake.

Rivera was best known for playing cheerleader Santana Lopez in Glee, in which she starred opposite Riley. The late actress appeared in all six seasons of the musical dramedy, and her character’s quick wit and hilarious one-liners quickly made her a fan favorite. In 2010, Rivera won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by and Ensemble in a Comedy Series, an honor she shared with her many co-stars.
