‘The Comey Rule’ Trailer: Watch Jeff Daniels and Brendan Gleeson Tackle the Comey-Trump Feud

The most anticipated limited series of the fall is finally here. On Monday, Showtime released the official trailer for The Comey Rule, starring Jeff Daniels and Brendan Gleeson as former FBI director James Comey and President Donald Trump. The star-studded limited series is set for a two-night premiere on Sunday, September 27, just a few weeks before the 2020 presidential election.

Based on Comey’s bestselling memoir A Higher Loyalty, Showtime’s The Comey Rule  dramatizes the turbulent relationship between two powerful men with very different moral codes. The limited series begins in the days leading up to the election, during which Comey’s team investigated more than 300,000 emails “to determine if one of the candidates in that election is going to be indicted.” The investigators soon tell Comey that they believe Russia is trying to “sabotage Secretary Clinton’s campaign,” and in the weeks to come, the team is stunned to see that Trump has pulled off an upset win.

“This was not espionage,” Daniels-as-Comey explains in the trailer. “This was an attack.” As the FBI director begins to dig into the Trump campaign’s relationship with Russia, he learns that Russian leader Vladimir Putin was “cultivating Trump as an asset,” a fact that constitutes a huge threat to national security.

As the world knows, as Comey inched closer to the truth, he and the president began to clash. “Nobody gets treated as unfairly as I do. It’s disgraceful,” says a transformed Gleeson. “I need loyalty. I expect loyalty.” The rest is history.

Showtime assures viewers that The Comey Rule will provide a definitive account of the Michael Flynn investigation and its aftermath. “Whatever side you’re on, you only know half the story,” reads a title card in the trailer. We’ll have to wait until next month to see if that holds water, but one thing is certain: Trump would likely disagree.

The Comey Rule airs Sunday, September 27 and Monday, September 28 on Showtime. Watch the official trailer above.
