HBO’s new series Lovecraft Country takes the thrilling action of pulp fiction and remixes it in a brand new way. Inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and legions of other genre pioneers, Lovecraft Country follows one sci-fi nerd as he and his family embark on a terrifying journey across a Jim Crow America populated not only by vile racists, but real monsters and dark magic. Created by Misha Green and produced by the likes of Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, Lovecraft Country is sure to be the last major show of summer 2020.
Based on the novel by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country stars Jonathan Majors as Atticus “Tic” Freeman, a bookworm-turned-soldier who has reluctantly returned home to the South Side of Chicago when he learns his father (Michael K. Williams) has gone missing. According to his kindly Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance), Tic’s father was last seen going off in search of the truth about Tic’s mother’s family. When Tic and Uncle George hit the road, they are initially joined by Leti (Jurnee Smollett), Tic’s childhood friend who is now hustling across the country as a photographer. What Tic, Leti, and George find, though, is both terrifying and exhilarating.
Lovecraft Country uses the setting of Jim Crow America to ratchet up the horror in each of its bone-chilling episodes. The intersection of dark magic and white supremacy seems to be hunting our heroes down at every turn.
