When Will ‘Mulan’ Be Free on Disney+?

You don’t have to wait much longer to watch Disney’s live-action remake of Mulanas long as you’re subscribed to Disney+ and willing to pay $30 for it. Last week, Disney revealed the film originally slated for theatrical release in March will be coming to its streaming service on September 4, but that subscribers will need to pay an additional $29.99 fee to watch it. Disney is calling this option “Disney Plus premier access.”

Basically, subscribers will have the option to pay a one-time, $29.99 fee to watch Mulan “before it’s available to all Disney+ subscribers.” On top of the regular Disney+ monthly subscription fee ($6.99), that’s a total of $37. The good news is that once you purchase the film, it will remain available to you as long as you stay subscribed to Disney+. In other words, it is not a 48-hour rental.

But what if you don’t want to pay the early-access fee, and just want to wait to watch Mulan for “free” when it becomes available to all Disney+ subscribers?

WHEN WILL MULAN BE FREE ON DISNEY PLUS?

Update, September 2: Mulan will be available for Premier Access until November 2. Then, starting December 4 it will be available to all Disney+ subscribers at no extra charge! Original article with speculation follows:

Short answer: We don’t yet know. Disney+ has not announced when Mulan (2020) will be available to regular subscribers on Disney+. Decider reached out to a representative for Disney but did not hear back by the time of publication.

Normally, the window between theatrical releases and VOD (Video on Demand) is 70 to 90 days. If you consider Mulan a theatrical release — and it is being released theatrically in territories where that’s an option — that would place Mulan as “free” on Disney+ around November 13, 2020, i.e. right in time for Thanksgiving. That makes a certain amount of sense, given Mulan releases in September, Mandalorian Season 2 in October, so Disney+ might need a little something to boost their slate the next month.

However, we could also estimate when Mulan will become available on regular Disney+ using a previous theatrical release as an example: Frozen 2. Frozen 2 came out in theaters on November 22, 2019 in the U.S. and hit Disney+ approximately four months later, on March 15, 2020. (It was released three months ahead of schedule, in response to families being stuck at home during the pandemic.) Mulan follows the same four-month release schedule, we can guess that Mulan will arrive on regular Disney+ sometime in early January 2021.

Of course, this is not a theatrical release, it’s an unprecedented situation caused by a global pandemic. So take those estimates with a grain of salt. If you want to get in on the Mulan action while everyone is talking about it, you might just want to pay the $30, if you can afford it. After all, that’s roughly the price of two movie tickets in a major city!
