Warning: This article contains The Half of It spoilers. (Please, as if you didn’t stay up until 3 a.m. last night to watch every minute of this film the second it was available. But just in case.)

The story of Ellie and Aster in The Half of It on Netflix—a new coming-of-age queer romance that’s out today—is unbearably cute, but also leaves viewers wanting more. Yes, filmmaker Alice Wu gave us that much-anticipated kiss between the shy, closeted Ellie (Leah Lewis) and the questioning Aster (Alexxis Lemire). But Ellie and Aster don’t exactly go off into the sunset to live happily ever after. Ellie is off to Grinnell College, and Aster if off to art school. Aster is clearly not ready to be in a relationship with another girl yet, but hints that she might be “in a couple of years.”

After Ellie and Aster share an adorable kiss, Ellie tells Aster, “I’ll see you in a couple of years.” Of course, that left fans wondering: Where is The Half of It sequel? We want to know what happens in a couple of years!

Will there be a The Half of It 2? Is there a The Half of It sequel happening?

I’m sorry to rain on this lesbian pride parade, but the odds of a The Half of It sequel don’t look good.

Never say never, but in an interview with Netflix for The Half of It press notes, Wu said that the number one message she wanted viewers to take away from her film was: “It’s ok that no one ends up with the girl. There’s this idea that we’re all searching for perfect love, which at the end of the day doesn’t exist. But while you’re on that doomed quest, you might have a shot at finding out who you are. Every person ultimately ends finding themselves, which is most important.”

Those don’t sound like the words of someone who is plotting a sequel where Ellie and Aster reunite a few years down the road in a sweeping, epic romance.

Listen. I know we all want to see Ellie and Aster make out and stuff (once Aster is emotionally ready for it, of course), but also, Wu makes a really great point. The Half of It is Ellie’s coming of age story, not Ellie and Aster’s love story. The good news? Give it a week, and I guarantee you that the fanfiction databases will be full of cute fix-it stories featuring the happily-ever-afters you’re longing to see. That’s what fanfiction is for!
