Netflix Acquires Paramount’s Kumail Nanjiani & Issa Rae Comedy ‘The Lovebirds’

Netflix has officially acquired the Media Rights Capital/Paramount comedy The Lovebirds for its streaming platform. The film was originally planned to debut on the big screen on April 3, but like several other movies, was halted due to the coronavirus shutdown of entertainment venues including movie theaters around the States.

The deal has been in the works for some time due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Details on whether this will be a global deal as well as when it will be available on the platform are still being finalized.

The film, which is directed by Michael Showalter, stars Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae as a couple who come to a crossroads in their relationship when they are forced into a murder mystery by chance.
According to Deadline, the highly anticipated movie was originally set to make its world debut at SXSW, however the movie’s cast and director bowed out for safety reasons, even prior to the festival being nixed entirely on March 6.

The Lovebirds will join Sonic the Hedgehog, The Invisible Man, Onward, I Still Believe, Bloodshot, The Hunt, Emma, Birds of Prey and The Way Back, as a number of theatrical releases that were forced to move to on demand due to the unexpected pandemic.

Paramount has previously done business with the streaming giant, allowing the platform to surprise release Bad Robot’s The Cloverfield Paradox following the 2018 Super Bowl. Netflix also took foreign rights to Natalie Portman’s sci-fi movie Annihilation and New Line’s Rebel Wilson movie Isn’t It Romantic (which is a good one by the way).

Although less than ideal, as theaters continue to scramble to make some sort of quick revenue on their theatrical prospects in this current climate, we should expect to see more of these deals throughout the coming months.
