The New Pope is often giving us new meaning to ideas we previously thought we understood: in themes of Christianity, culture, and now…phone sex.
In a provocative scene from the second episode, Sofia (Cécile de France) performs a sexual act more literal than we’ve ever seen on screen before. She’s away on a business trip, staying in a luxurious bed, and when she requires her needs to be met by Tomas (Tomas Arana), she gives him a call — though it’s unclear if this is proper FaceTime etiquette.
The two lightly bicker about the music she can hear through the walls until she commands him to “Lick me” and begins to rub the phone facedown into her crotch. It should also be noted at this point that while Sofia looks gorgeous in the high-end fashion she’s often wearing, she also looks glamorous in nothing more than a satin sheet.
First of all, it’s a good thing she performs this act with the phone over the sheet and not under it — there’s a whole lot of germs on those screens and you likely just saved yourself a UTI, my friend. Though to be fair, it’s not a great view for Tomas on the other side who is likely only seeing a black screen as he listens to her moan. Sure she’s getting off on knowing he’s there on the line, but from a practical standpoint, it probably would’ve been more useful for her if she just hung up, made sure the phone on vibrate, and let him call her back, letting it ring and ring. Do you, girl!
She remains unaffected (perhaps even turned on?) as the faces in the paintings that adorn the room watch on as she pleasures herself. But this is The New Pope, so you know it only continues to get weirder. Just as Sofia finishes, Pope Pius XIII (Jude Law) enters the room (though he is actually in a coma?), invisible to her, and gently helps her roll onto her side. He sits down on the bed and places his hand on her shoulder as she catches her breath, and then he leaves the room. His work here is done. And so is she. No word on Tomas on the other end of the line, but she likely rubbed that phone so hard it hung up at some point. Move over “butt dial” and meet “vagina hang up”.
