We’re only one award in and already things are heating up at the Golden Globes. In a shocking turn of events Ramy Youssef took home the award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. But who exactly is Ramy Youssef? And what is his show Ramy on Hulu about?

Youssef was part of a competitive category for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The relatively unknown actor went head-to-head with Michael Douglas for The Kominsky Method, Bill Hader for Barry, Ben Platt for The Politician, and Paul Rudd in Living with Yourself.

“I would like to thank my God, Allahu Akbar,” Youssef began in his acceptance speech. He then added, “Look I know you guys haven’t seen my show. … We made a very specific show about an Arab, Muslim family living in New Jersey.”

So who exactly is Ramy Youssef? Before his Hulu show Youssef was best known for his work as a standup comedian. He’s also starred in Mr. Robot, Why Him?, and See Dad Run. But it was 2019 that really pushed him to more mainstream attention. That’s when the first season of his comedy Ramy premiered on Hulu.

Created, starring, and written by Youssef, Ramy follows a first-generation American Muslim man who is grappling with his own spiritual journey in the middle of a politically divided New Jersey neighborhood. Consistently Ramy feels at odds with the Egyptian community that raised him and the Millennial generation that has wildly different expectations for him.

During a time defined by so much incredible comedy, Ramy is an underrated, heart-felt gem. Equally hilarious and insightful, the first season of the comedy received a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The series has already been renewed for a second season. And that early win definitely says good things about its future as well as the awards future of Hulu.
